I run them in my race cars and they work great. I bought a 1200 for my 97 and it also works great. The only problem is the battery post locations and the height of the battery. I made up some new cables to use it.
I just installed an Odyssey PC1700MJT in my '98 about 2 weeks ago.
It sits in the OEM battery box (modified with a hacksaw... ) on the driver's side. I used the OEM hold down and the OEM hold down bolts (trimmed down). I only had to make up some spacers to take up the slack on the top side...
So far, this one battery has been enough to run the grid heaters and still have plenty of amperage to provide for normal crank speeds in 25°F weather. It hasn't been much colder than that around here yet...
Would I buy another one? Yup. No doubt about it. They're spendy - but seem well worth it so far.
I really need to take pictures of my setup - since pictures are worth at least a thousand words.
Since originally posting, I have done some more research. I'm sold, plain and simple. Like em so well, the motorcycle will be outfitted with one before next riding season. Thanks for the replies.
A friend of mine did a Odyssey 2150 on the drivers side and removed the other battery. He needed the room for his Amsoil Dual Bypass system and the pipe for twins.
I have the 2150 mounted and removed the dual ones... works great ! 1090 crank amps at Zero degrees
had to make new cables also. . used welding cable so it was an improved set up. . needed to deal with the passenger side grounds, just used the old battery ground and cut off the post end added a HD stud end and bolted all the grounds together. . now will go back and clean up the passenger side after the room has been accounted for
Willyslover was just up at the shop last week having some twins put in... I was gawking under the hood and noticed the battery... I think it was 2200 RA rated... . nearly blew me away. He also had to tweak the battery box for it but it still fit in there quite well.
Pretty much eliminated the need for the/a second battery over were the twins were being born...
I removed the 2 batteries from my 99 and ran with one 1700. Has as much power as the 2 did. No corrossion and truck can sit for awhile and not have to worry if it will turn over.
The single PC1700MJT I have in the '98 on the driver's side has been fantastic. Sorta tight fit... and only required a little battery box massaging with a hack saw. I have no idea how people are installing a 2150 in there... without moving some stuff around.
It sat in the garage from before X-Mas until 3 weeks into February (with several weeks of negative teens temps). I figured it had to be dead... so I hooked up the charger. The charger ran for 10 seconds and shut off... it didn't even need a charge! It fired off as if it was just started an hour before.
Would I buy another one? In a second.
On edit: Here are some pics of the install. I had to move the ground cable's connection point on the block for more slack. I also used the factory hold downs by cutting some pieces of aluminum to make up the difference. I had to cut the factory hold down bolts a bit as well. It sits right up against the windshield washer reservoir. I'm not worried about the battery... since it has a full metal jacket - the washer reservoir might get a little divet in it over time until it 'wears in'.
Matt. . they fit well after you cut the radiator side of the tray off . . the end only. . L shaped cut just above the tray floor. . then have to put a couple 1/2"thick strips of wood under the battery as it won't sit down on the floor . . tray has plenty of support cause it has a brace/leg under it. . then just lengthen the hold down with all thread. .
have to remake the cables as the 2150 has 3/8" studs in place of posts... I made all new cables out of HD welding lead cable and HD lug ends all through waytek wire co. soldered and crimped them for great connections also used the new fuseable shrink tape to wrap the ends by the terminals.
had to redo the grounds on the passenger side also, I cut the post end off and installed one of the HD lug ends I used on the other side and bolted all the grounds together. . they are temp right now but will clean up that now that the twins are in and I know what space was needed.
Gary: I know a 1700 will fit (tightly) - the above pictures were taken on my truck... since the 2150 is even longer than a 1700, that's why I was wondering how you installed it in there.
if you open this up with microsoft photo I think you can scroll up to a larger pic. . then you'll see how much it overlaps the tray . . about 7/8" inch . . and in the bottom of the tray there are some ribs that I think need to stay for strength that why the lil pieces of wood under the battery. . if this pic doesn't come thru. . I'll e-mail to you Matt so you can do your photo magic
Oh ya mean the dirty side... just like anyone elses who lives in snow country and just moved a battery out of the way 'cept for those pretty new grey pipes :-laf next to the rusty HX40 hot side
