Since installing ( only for test purposes;) ) my EZ boost elbow, my filter minder thinks my filter is dirty. I assume it is confused because of higher boost. Any ideas on recalibrating it or getting one that will be ok with higher boost ( or as it sees it: higher vacuum) ?

TX Diesel,

Have you removed your snorkel that goes from the airbox to the fenderwell? I was able to pull my filter minder gauge down easily until I found the snorkel was not shoved through the fenderwell hole far enough. It was getting cocked in the airbox hole and causing a restriction. Since I installed it properly I cannot move my filter minder at all.

OK, I checked the snorkel and it seems to be good. A loose fit actually but it seems to be in place. Thanks for the suggestion. Is it correct to assume that the higher than normal boost is causing it to mess up? If it is bad than mother (DC) can buy me a new one. Thanks

I had the same problem with mine... I think that the snorkle is sealing itself on the inside of the fender ... . when it does that there is a woop woop sound from the airbox area I think caused by high vacuum, it sucks down, deforms and then lets go.

If I stayed in it it would keep doing it and the filter minder would be maxed out . I drilled some 3/4 inch holes into the front and lower side of the snorkle and now the filter minder stays down and no more noise from air box.

Hope that helps,

You are moving more air through the filter, you are creating a vacuum, the turbo is sucking more air but you have a restriction in the air supply. try removing the snorkel, or modifying it ot allow more air flow. I can suck mine down to 100% restriction with an un modified snorkel. Drawing a vacuum is not good as the seals on the turbo shaft will try to allow oil in to the sucksion side of the turbo to equalise the pressure differential.

Steve,

Is that flange your thumb is bending in the photo supposed to (under normal circumstances) be tucked inside the airbox as a way to hold the snorkel on the airbox? Or..... was it just floating near the opening of the airbox as mine was????

TIA,

David

David, mine was floating. I finally took it off a few months ago before I got the EZ. I tried drilling the holes like Steve suggested and then put the snorkel back in last weekend. Well the increase in boost from the EZ just sucked the thing right out of the fender and into the box. The snorkel is now resting comfortably in my tool box :D

John

Thanks John. I must admit it seems silly to have the thing just floating at the edge of the airbox. Makes me wonder why they bothered to put the flange on it at all. Interesting about the boost though..... sucked it right into the airbox!!! I would suppose the filter minder operation would be affected now, but change intervals are easy to establish :p

I think I had the only snorkel in the world that was installed from INSIDE the airbox. It never came loose either. It's easier to install by just sticking it in the fender, then installing the airbox. I personally think it should be installed from inside the airbox - mine had tabs that held it in place and kept it from sucking into the box (if the tabs get where they're supposed to be).

I am going to switch from the OEM air filter that is still in to either Fleetguard or K&N (haven't decided yet). I have also experienced the whoop... whoop noise when under load while climbing a long hill... etc. Scared the heck out of me when I heard it the first time:eek: . Here's my questions:

If I remove the snorkel and put in the new air filter:

A. Will the filter minder still work as with the stock setup?

B. What affect, if any, will the warmer air from inside the engine compartment have on performance, etc. My assumption is that with the snorkel removed, most air flow will come from inside the engine compartment, although some will still be pulled in through the fender opening.

C. Any other considerations I should know about with just these simple changes?

TXRam has the answer, for 99 models anyway. My snorkel installs from the inside of the airbox, and the big lip sort of seals the gap around where it goes out of the airbox. Mine has small triangular tabs that keep it from being sucked into the airbox.

socal, your filterminder will work just as it has if you remove the snorkel. I have run mine with it in and out and cannot tell any difference in performance or economy. I would suggest taking it out and doing some testing of your own.
