I`m wanting to get a spare lift pump for my 2003 5. 9 and was thinking it could possibly be a Cummins part . Its working fine ,I just want a spare in case . Thanks

Some one may correct me but I believe the OEM pump is no longer available at Cummins or Dodge. I know that NAPA did carry them & I think Geno's still does.

Thanks, Looks like my NAPA dealer has one made by Carter that run s 200 bucks. For an emergency I`m sure if I don`t get it and it fails I`ll be kicking myself hard . Snow storm on the western horizen and not sure when if ever this one has been switched out. Everything else on the truck has had new parts except lift pump and it makes me nervous going into 12-24 hour shifts behind the wheel pushing snow. Carter makes a lot of stuff so I`m fairly confident.

Is far as I know they are all made by Carter. Even the ones for $350 in a Delphi box. I'm talking about the one that mounts on the back of the filter housing. I get mine at NAPA.

Yep , I just get to thinking plowing snow that I need one in the glove box. Hopefully you don`t have to be a contorshionist to switch him out when needed.

No pretty easy to switch out but out in a snow covered parking lot wouldn't be my choice of places to change it, though. I changed mine out before it quit and put the old one in the truck for the spare.

I know if it were me I would get rid of the Carter pump. After 4 or 5 of them I went to a FASS HPFP 95, that was 8 years ago & have not had a problem since, knock on wood.

When this time of year hits at least the weather isn`t that cold here but for now at least I have one handy. Just looks like the wheel well needs to come out and squeeze in their to switch it. Money is an issue on what pump to go with, I have ran this one for 4 years commercially and have yet to touch it so I figured for now this is better than being down for three days waiting for one .

The newer Carter pumps are of a brushless design. The high failure rate on the older pumps were brush related. I bought a new one on Amazon for just over $100. As has been said, keep the old one for a spare if it is still working.

My buddy Chris has an 03 that made about 250k before the original fainted. The replacement didn't make 10k, so he switched over to the Fass pump. It's $312. 55 at Geno's.

The original pump hasn't been available from Cummins for a few years now. Mine had the in tank upgrade but I installed an AirDog. Shad

My factory one was still working at 150k when I changed it. The new one I got from Geno's has 70k on it and it seems to be going strong. I replaced mine without removing the wheel well liner, however it would have been easier had I removed it.

The OEM got the keystroke shaft, I still See the OEM on 03/04 Trucks What 10 years old, the Dog/Fass will be dead in 4 to 6 Years in DD use,I have replace My OEM back 4 or 5 years Ago, the Added Pump at the Same Time.

I just checked the Properties of the Pictures 4-29-2008, Engine was built 6-1-02 and Truck was built 10-22-02. that little Pump made 427 RWHP, the dual setup Made 602 RWHP with 90s T-Dog Banks 6-Gun Stack with Modded CP3. I have the In-cab Switch ,So I can run 1 or both, When All my Diesels are out of Warranty I install 2 lift systems.

I have the TC Diesel dual lift pump mod on my truck. Thanks Todd!! I am extremely pleased. Changing any pump due to failure on the roadside is not my idea of a good time. I watch my low pressure fuel gauge and will know if I lose a pump again and can get to where I need to for a changeout.

My neighbor had his go out on an 04. They towed it and the dealer socked him like 1200 bucks to install the upgrade in tank pump. As many endless hours I`ve spent behind the wheel of this truck I can`t say the OEM pump isn`t reliable. We got through this last major snowstorm with about twelve hours of non-stop work in order to finish up each account. My guess is I went through right at 14 gallons of diesel fuel. A bit off topic ,but that is very good mileage for an automatic 1 ton truck loaded and working it hard. I am hesitant to install our new OEM pump if it is going to provide good service. Yes it will suck if it fails but having a spare means hopefully several hour delay verses screwed without one on a shelf.

I`m wondering if I just drop the filter assembly to switch pumps ... .....

You can change the pump without dropping the filter assembly. It is way easier (for me at least) to drop the inner fender well to make the fuel line connections and bolt on the pump. It has 4 hex head bolts. A 1/4 drive ratchet and a short extension should cover it.
