OEM or Dorman TIPM?

Hello everyone, I could use some info or personal feedback regarding what TIPM to purchase. Mine has been on its way out for a while now, strange wiper/high bream/squirter issues. The Dealer quoted me $1300 for the unit alone but then I saw online Dorman remanufactured units for $400 or so with a core. My questions is, has anyone had experience with the Dorman unit and would it be a wise choice?

Dorman 100%. Couldn't be easier to install. Just follow their included instructions and it will self program.

I have a pretty detailed TIPM replacement thread somewhere here on the forum from a couple years ago. I'll see if I can find it for you.

I am pretty sure that the Dormans are simply remanufactured oem units brought back to life even though there is no core charge.

EDIT: In trying to determine if Dorman uses a core charge on the TIPM sales, I just found this link to a company that also supplies rebuilt and new TIPMs for Chrysler/Dodge/ Jeep and even VW vehicles. They have some in stock and charge $595 same as Dorman) with a 2 year warranty!!

Thanks everyone for the replies. I checked out timprebuilders and they are out of stock on that unit. Dorman does require a core but I may go that route because no telling when the other will be available. I’ll get back to you when I have the new unit.

Do you really need the TIPM to work in the vehicle? I know my truck would have a nervous breakdown if I ever re-installed the sensors back in my tires. I have removed them as I see no purpose in TIPM or TPMS on any vehicle. Unless you are a millennium or of a later generation who needs a cellphone and google to figure out how to do anything.

I check the tire air pressure the first of every month and adjust them accordingly even the spare tires on both of my vehicles and trailer. Does TPMS or TIPM work on your spares? My 2008 doesn't when new.

The only time that I ever had a TPMS warning was on my wife's VW. I was driving and I heard a pop from a tire, my wife asked what was that and I stated a flat. Just as I said that the TPMS lite up and ding telling me I had low tire pressure. REALYY!!!!

LOL.... there is a HUGE difference between TIPM and TPMS.

TPMS, as you seem to know, stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System.

TIPM stands for Totally Integrated Power Module.
It is an Integrated Circuit fuse box/distribution center with IC relays and IC fuses that performs almost ALL of the electrical switching tasks on the truck, except for the actual ECM and some other sub modules.

While certainly one could choose to run the truck with a faulty TPMS, or even disconnect it by removing the tire pressure sensors, it would be nearly impossible to achieve safe and normal road operations with a disconnected TIPM.

Check it out.... I just found this repair service, Circuit Board Medics, that can rebuild the TIPM with a 1 day turnaround and a 1 year "no hassle" warranty on the repaired unit for half the price of the Dorman.

I know NOTHING about them, but they DO have over 500 positive user reviews on google.

If I could have been more patient that would have been an option. I just placed the order yesterday morning for the Dorman unit.

I got a Dorman from Orilley as they had it in stock, super easy install and works good. Only issue I had was it came loaded with all the fuses, all but the electronic 4wd so if you get it installed and the electric shift does not work make sure the fuse is installed!

For future reference, I've used them for appliance parts (no vehicle stuff yet) with good results. Quick, fair, and a very modest fee to test a suspect part. I'll check there first at my next (inevitable) electronics failure.

Be careful not to get fooled by the advertised price of a OEM TIPM. Make sure there is not a core charge on the new one from the online marketers or the dealer. It is false advertising to list a price for a NEW part and then require a core charge too. The real price winds up being substantially higher (over $100 bucks more for the TIPM iirc). It should be illegal to have a core charge on a new part imo!

Many times a core charge is applied on new parts to get cores into the stream that can be rebuilt and offered as reman units down the road. Very common practice for DTNA parts such as Detroit Diesel, Freightliner and Western Star..

Plus it provides a chance for the OEM’s to do a failure analysis on parts that are out of warranty. A lot of things people think are a ripoff really are not once you follow it through...product improvement flow requires a lot of failure analysis..

I understand why they want the old ones, but it is still false advertising if the core charge is mandatory on a new part and it is not included in the advertised price. I buy a new part so I don't have to deal with the core bs. Often I want to keep the old part for a spare, or to see why it failed or save it as a core for the next time if I go for a rebuilt part. In the case of my PDC I repaired the old one so it would not be valid as a core.

Bottom line is if you walk in and buy the new part the price should be advertised as $700. If you buy the new part and they are willing to pay you $150 for your old one, that is fine. The price for the new part is still $700 not $550!!!! Simple and honest.
