As a precaution I recently replaced the original lift-pump in my 2003 2500 with the Carter P76110 kit which mounts in the same location on the back of the fuel filter canister. It is an improved design [brushless for enhanced reliability], and was the least expensive and apparently easiest to install option.

but thought the solution warranted this seperate post.
It was supposed to be plug-and-play, but the supplied female quick connect fuel fitting is not identical to the original Dodge female fitting, and so I'm writing so as to hopefully save folks the same trouble. The issue is the Dodge blue plastic retainer clip would not latch into the supplied female connecter. After fussing with it for a while I came to suspect the Carter fitting was made with an integral steel retainer for the bare fuel line, which is why it wouldn't go together with a "second" retainer. The other possibility was that the supplied female connector was meant to work with some other type of retainer clip not included.
In any case the only way it would go together was without the original Dodge blue plastic retainer clip, and so that is how I assembled it. Truck starts, runs well, and started properly after sitting overnight.
I searched the lift-pump posts, and others reported this same issue. One suggested solution was to cut the original fitting from the OEM lift-pump, but I had planned to keep my original pump as a spare, and so chose not cut up my “spare”. A web search turned up the Dorman 800-006 retainer clip, and 800-082 quick-connect fitting which are supposed to match the Dodge fittings, and the pictures do look like a match. I found them at RockAuto, and ordered them as a precaution.
If Carter had supplied factory fittings, or directions explaining their non-oem fitting, this would have been the easy task it was supposed to be. For the folks who carry a spare lift-pump, you might also want to pick up the Dorman quick-connect fittings.
Hope this helps,
Paul
