I’m a newby to my truck – I love driving my truck. I have always liked critters of all kinds, and I love being

with my dogs.

I am at the age where I wake up at the same time every day no matter what; that is around 5:00 AM - 5:30 AM for me on a work day. So, every Sunday morning my eyes pop open while the rest of the house dreams on. I always get something for breakfast ready the night before and set the coffee maker. The next morning I grab the coffee and my eats, open the doors of the truck to let the dogs leap in, and drive around twenty to thirty minutes out to different areas where I can let the dogs off the leash to run while I walk for two to three hours. I just love running down the road listening to the Cummins hum with the dogs sitting on the seat next to me.

One of the places I go is a state games land. I had not been to this place since June. I let the dogs loose and started walking to look at a beaver dam and pond. This beaver dam blocks a little tiny creek that runs down between two wooded hills. You can see that years ago there were three ponds in succession as you go downhill. This spring there was one big pond at the top.

The beavers were busy this summer! The big pond was a good twenty feet farther into the woods with all types of new canals and shallow level dams. The beaver house out in the middle of the pond is at least three to four feet taller than it was in June – it is huge.

The beavers also moved down the hill. There is no longer any creek between the two ponds – they have built the second dam so high that water exits from the first pond and flows into a big new pond right below it. I could step over the tiny creek right below the big pond in June; now there is at least thirty feet of water at the narrowest point.

I didn’t know that beavers could make such a big change so fast. All of the construction work the beavers did made my hike difficult – all my paths were now underwater and I spent a lot of time working through prickly stands of wild berries, wild roses, and thick brush. The dogs had no problem moving through the brush and kept circling around to look at me and see why I was so slow. The dogs ran and swam around through the ponds like crazy.

I did not take my camera - I'll try to get some pictures next time.

I have never trapped, but I know there is a trapping season. I kind of hope that the beavers don’t all get trapped out this year – I’d like to see what all they do next year. I wish I got all my projects done as quickly!

A nice little part od succession.
The area will get silted in, They will clean up the smaller pioneer trees, ( and probably a few decent hardwoods) Whe they run out they'll move on. Meanwhile, duck fish and all kinds of critters will be using those nice ponds for home.
I have one on the family farm, where they had probably 20 acres flooded. They have girdled some decent cherry trees, so I have some logging to do. I will leave them the tops.
