Just wondering how many miles some of you have on your stock automatic transmission with stock CTD power before any failure? When you had a failure what failed? What do you think you did that kept you from having problems? What is your maintance process?

I have 48K miles with no problems, changed fluid and filter at 32K, have not adjusted the bands and mine is a daily driver with light hauling and towed 8-9K lbs a couple of times. Automatic still seems to work great.

I ask this question before and there are stock autos out there with 100k + on them. I would be interented in how long one will last with and EZ and proper driving. I have taken my EZ off because I do not want to trash the transmission.

The '91 in my sig below has 119,000 miles on it, has done LOTS of aggressive towing of our RV - and still shifts like new... Serviced as aggressively as it is driven, and I ALWAYS give it a break on shifts by lifting the throttle to allow it to shift with less stress and slippage...

not a 24 valve,,but my 94 has 211,000 + on it and with 70,000 of them being lightly bombed.

it pushes snow,,pulls my 5er and other heavy loads as needed.

bands adjusted twice . fluid(atf +3) & filter changed once a year.

must have got a good one:D

yea,,yea,, i'm knockin on wood:rolleyes:

27k, I know, barely broken in, but with EZ the stock TC slips under heavy throttle empty and of course towing. :{ Gonna go with a DTT TC as soon as I have the cash on hand.

I have 142,000 in my 98. 5 3500 4x4. The truck is stock and has not towed much. It has been in 4wd about 10,000 of those miles in Alaska, Texas, and all lands between. I did a transmission service for one guy and he had over 250,000 on his and he towed all across the country, and has had zero problems with his truck. He just said " I drive it right and keep it maintained and she just keeps on trucking".

some of you are about half way to where i have gotten :D

233,000 miles just regular changes and on the "keep-full" program currently :D

90 000 miles on mine had 2nd gear band adjusted (only one that needed it) and oil changed once. I tow often and no hint of any slippage, I did order a six speed though:D

VA, boost module, DD1's and a Torqus Maximus ECM. The TCC can be slipped, but if driven right slippage is not an issue. All but the ECM have been on since about 40K miles, truck has 100K miles on it now, ECM has been on nearly 10K. Bone stock transmission except for the line pressure turned up. Towing is light weights, but very often for about 3 months of the year. It gets hammered too, towing or not. Dyno 277 in fluid coupling, puts it easily over 300 RWHP in lockup. They are not as weak as most think, but there are some that are really weak. It is luck of the draw as to whether you get a good one or a bad one.

Here in ND most people buy their trucks for heavy work and I know of several guys and many trucks with 150,000 miles, give or take a few miles, The trucks are driven by all kinds of guys old, young, and in between, they pull heavy loads and not always on the highway. Have only heard of a few haveing problems, but then again the trucks are beat on regularly.

I see one member may be going to stick on next truck. What about you other members. Would you get auto again??

transmission

Pit I have 175,000 on my 98. 5. I don't tow much over 8,000 but I put the miles on in just over two yrs. Yes to another auto. Been thinking when this one takes a I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER I'll have it bombed and see how that works out. Jim

If I was to do it all over again I would buy a manual.

Don't get me wrong, this modified auto transmission I have is just as good or better than a manual ( in my opinion ) but it would have been cheaper to just buy a manual truck. I bought this truck to do work, not haul my ass to the ball room.

transmission

My transmission is stock with 11k miles. Towing (8,000 lbs) over the mountains last weekend the torque converter shuddered and made a scraping noise when downshifting on a steep grade. For towing I wish I had gotten the 6 spd, but most of my driving is back and forth to work.

Ron what kind of mods do you have and who did the work. There is so much info out there that I don't konw which product to go with. Hope I didn't start another pi$$ing contest :D :D Jim

Jeepit, i have had two Auto trucks and one five speed. the auto's are only GOOD after you modify them. in stock form they can hardly get the truck of of its own way.

parts break. in both setups. it just cost less to make the manuals hold a little more.

my wife mandated an auto in this truck because she is taking it after its done :D

my next truck will also have an auto, because i plan to make it into a pro street setup. regular cab, short bed(I will build it), two wheel drive, coil over four link, lowered and lots of smoke :D
