I would get a manual next time. I did my research and decided before I bought the truck I would get it DTT modified. Now almost 2 years later I do not want to spend that kind of money on a transmission that works. Now with the DTT vs ATS drama. I wish I had a manual.

dezeldog,

I have the complete exchange transmission from BD. Upgraded clutch packs, Their new 7X converter, modified valve body, and pressure lock, everything but cryo-ed shafts.

I can tell you this much about their transmission. When I had the DC transmission with just the injectors the transmission was fine but on level one of the comp box and the TC would slip, even in third direct if I wasn't careful. With the BD transmission running in over drive lockup I can floor it in level 2 with the injectors and not worry about a thing. The HP should be somewhere around 280-290. I know other guys are running higher HP ( alot higher ) with this transmission and they are haveing no problems. I have not tried any levels above 2 and don't intend to for two reasons, 1. The truck has more than enough power towing what is in my signature and 2. I live on a limited income and for what new parts cost I want this transmission, engine, and truck to live as long as possible.

If I haven't answered well enough please ask, I will do my best to answer your questions.

auto trans mileage

just changed fluid (atv plus 3 ) adjusted bands installed hytec pan . truck has 201000km (120000 ) miles. no problems so far. however have not towed or hauled anything. :) :) Oo. Oo. Oo.

121,000 miles and still going strong... . Bought the truck with 87,000 miles on it in NOV. 2001... ... And since i have had it, i have pulled a forty foot gooseneck behind it I would say for about 85% of the time... ... . with a load from 100lbs to 20,000lbs on the trailer... then throw in the 7-8000lbs of trailer weight... . I say she has held up very well. Had to have computer flashed the other day... TC would not stay locked... ... kept locking and unlocking... . Now she runs like a raped ape... Its like a different truck. 1st and 2nd gear shift points have changed... . get a few more RPM's out of them before the shift.

TSB 18-02-99

I am sure it was TSB 18-02-99. Thats the one I got when my torque converter was locking/unlocking. Changed my shift points two. Rev's up more before shifting. More pleasurable to drive. Makes you won't to put your foot in it more.

I love when people pull up beside you at a red light on the passenger side driving a convertible. Smell My Fumes and Fan My Smoke!! :D

Had a '95 auto/3. 54. A little sluggish with the 160HP Cummins. Traded for a '98 12v 5spd/4. 10. Pulled like a champ if you don't mind listening to it howl like a banshee all day long. Traded it for a '01. 5 auto/3. 55. I prefer to lumber along at 1750rpm/65mph while towing. No transmission trouble with any of the three. I only have 18,000 on my new one. I like the way it shifts like it's in tow mode all the time. It has more than enough power to tow our 5th wheel bone stock.

Autos in stock form can hardly get the truck out of it's own way? That's not what I'm reading or experiencing. :D

Just sold my '94 4x4 regular cab auto to a friend of my son. The truck had 160,000 miles on it when I sold it. The first 100K were stock, the last 60,000 had a TST 235 HP kit on it. The truck was used to pull a 24' gooseneck trailer with 7500 pound tractor/mower on it. I also pulled my 5th wheel trailer with it.

Never did anything to it but service it every 25k miles. My teenage son drove it for two years and couldn't tear it up! I would buy another auto, but my current truck has a 5 speed.

182k, most all bombed with just 24k filter/fluid changes and tps cleaning - no problems. This was my very first auto, hard to get used to not shifting gears at first but now I love it.

transmission

To the answer to jeepit, I will Never buy a auto for my self in the next truck. My EXWIFE had to have a auto so I gave in and bought it.

Now I have new wife wonts a auto also, I bought a 99 quad cab Ford Ranger so she has a auto... . I am going to please myself as I am paying for it... .

I dont need to build boost at a red light or between shifts, and I dont like a 3 speed transmission with overdrive. A five speed auto or anouther gear maybe.

How ever I have the 95 4x4 extended cab with 80k miles and It is very clean so, and I dont like much having it payed for,so I have thought sell the truck and buy a 98 with a 5 speed. I would if I could find one,or traded some how,

I am going to buy a home in the country so I dont wont a lot of debt so I might buy a crate auto or have on built, if my auto give me any trouble, with all of the whistles and bells, and drive it for a while, not patch job or half a overhaul. If I had a great auto with my gear vendor that would hold me over, untill I can my what I really wont. Thanks for the advice on the auto JIM, as I may go that way.

jeepit, I was ready to trade mine in for a 6sp but after driving one I decided to go for the trans upgrade instead. After the trans was upgraded I love the way it drives and shifts, and if I bought a new auto I would have the trans. done right off. :)

I've had both manual and auto-and am driving a stock auto and liking it now. Hopefully after getting DTT or ATS improvements i'll be loving it. My advice would be if you're towing almost all the time, or working the truck alot I'd lean towards the manual, but I like the automatic for driving in traffic and off road. Just makes for an easier commute. Mine has 56K with questionable service and is working well.

Tran. Failure

I recently had to have a new transmission (auto) put in my '01. by the dealer.

At 35k miles it started to slam back and forth between gears at low speeds. I've had the transmission serviced by the dealer at both 15k and 30k. (oil, filter, band adjustment etc... )

The Dealer replaced the transmission without any hassles but couldn't tell me the what the problem for the failure was. (you know, the mech. already went home and the service writer doesn't know a thing).

This truck has not been used for towing unfortunately (that's another story altogether) mostly just freeway miles.

I hope to have better luck with the new one.

Our '99 had the TC go at 66k. transmission rebuild, new front pump and TC covered under the service contract. Just tipped 100k with no further problems.

Tow a 28' TT (about 8500 lbs), commercial snowplower, summers do the residential roofing thing.

Not mine, but my buddy has 280 plus miles on his 94 2x4. He has pulled a 5 horse slant for over 180k and has changed the fluid once. It is in slight need of a rebuil but he just keeps going. He reguarly get 15mpg towing and 22 plus empty.

Mine was trashed many moons ago.

I have 2 cummins trucks.

My 1990 2500 4x4 12valve has over 180,000 with only a band adjustment. Still runs like new. It's used for hauling heavy loads and equipment. :D

My 1999 3500 4x4 24valve had the trans go out at 32,000 miles, 6 weeks after a Banks Power Pack was installed. It hauls a 3500 lb camper with a small cargo trailer (the vacation vehicle). Unfortunately I was in the middle of no-where and could only have another stock 47re was put in. Now I can't use my RV until I do some sort of trans upgrade or get a new truck. Currently at 41,000 mi:{

I have a 98 with auto trans. It has 231k on it. Most of those miles were pulling a 7000 lb trailer. Some kind of spring went out on it at about 120k. I have changed the fluid a few times and thats all still works great.

I also have an 02, 6 spd. No problems with it.

For pulling I definitely like the 6 spd but for everyday driving or light loads the auto is much better. It is even faster in stop and go because of not having to shift all the time.

I also feel like in slippery conditions the auto is a little safer because you do not break traction as much.
