Suposedly there is a gas station just north of me that has OFF ROAD DIESEL,and a friend of mine says he is running it in his PSD,I thought this stuff was illegal?

I haven't went up there to look yet,but he says it is $1. 75 per gallon,he claims he has been running it in his truck for six months since he got his 96 PSD.

Would this stuff work in our trucks?

Thanks

OFF ROAD and regular (ON ROAD?) diesel is the same fuel. OFF ROAD is just dyed red and no taxes. You can use the red all you want but what you save in taxes will not come close to what the fine will be if you get caught.

Not always true. Offroad diesel is dyed but offered in two grades typically - low sulfur and high sulfur. Some folks still get the high sulfur stuff for tractors and farm use. On road diesel and offroad low sulfur are in fact the same thing, the latter just having red dye. High sulfur fuel would be bad for your CTD.

I hear the fines for running it are quite steep, and certainly are more than you will save running offroad diesel for many months.

I have a friend that worked for the local Shell distributor and when I asked him about the off road fuel for my John Deere, he said that unless I was gonna run a whole lot of fuel through it(cost effective), stay with the on road because it had more additives and was better because of that. He is also a 12 valve owner.

The red dye stays in the filter even after the tank of offroad fuel is burned and can be easily seen. That's the second thing they look at after dipping the fuel tank.

The IRS and State Police are always interested in those that run off-road in their pickups. The IRS part is enough to keep me from doing it! :-laf

I'm guessing the Off Road Diesel is in fact the same as home heating oil.

very close anyways

onroad fuel and offroad fuel are almost identical now other than the color. with modern electronic fuel injected engines, they want the low sulfer fuel in them. you can get a ISB in truck appication and you can get that very same ISB in a compactor or wheel loader. same goes for bigger engines. you can get a CAT 3406 in trucks, and in other HD applications. one is offroad, one is onroad, but the engines are near identical [maybe some software changes and accessories different] they both need the same quality of fuel.

Not going to use it,I was wondering he is using it and he is NOT a farmer he filled his truck before he headed camping this last weekend and called me bragging about how cheap it was,and his truck is not running right, rough idle and his mileage is terrible, that is why I was wondering.

I was contemplating trying it,but when someone said IRS that was all I had to hear, don't want them on my back. . Thanks

The construction company I work for was using a water truck on a jobsite for about 9 months. In the interest of saving some $$$, the superintendent decided to fuel it with dyed diesel.

Everything was great until the IRS fuel tax enforcement officer (What????) showed up and sticked the tank.

They dinged us with $1000 fine, even though the vehicle was only being used off-road. The only way for it to be legal is if the truck were registered as a non-op. If your vehicle has plates, it needs to run on clear diesel.

1st fine = $1000

2nd fine = $2000

3rd fine = $3000

And it just keeps going up 'til you learn your lesson.

If I had a place to keep a 550 gal. fuel tank, I would run red diesel, but that's because my truck is for personal use. If it was used for work, and I stood a better chance of being checked out by the CHP, I would (and do) use clear diesel.

Too bad, as the local stations have diesel at between $2. 44 and $2. 59...

It would be nice to fill up and save about $. 30/gal.

Red Fuel

A lot of trucks are running red fuel they just will not come on and post it for good reason. :-laf

IRS. :p

Just curious but what right does somebody have to test your tank in the first place?... . I mean isn't there something about illegal search and seisure or something like that?..... That would seem to me to be like the police pulling you over for and checking the inside of your vehicle just because you may have something illegal... . Doesn't sound right to me.....

And running red fuel in non-farm / construction / off-road equipment to avoid due taxes isn't "RIGHT" either.

You are playing with the feds and it don't do to mess with them.

If you're operating on public roads, they have the right to ensure that you've paid the requisite fuel tax to do so. Those that run off-road fuel are using our public roads but leaving it up to those of us who pay the fuel taxes to build and maintain the roads. Does that sound "right" to you?

I agree with the majority here: it's generally not worth the 1K (+ 100/gal ??) to be running other than highway diesel, even with the current "stick it to us because of high demand" prices (love how they use middle eastern conflict as a reason... . I say that's BS).

Anway, what is the difference between:

1. Home heating fuel

2. Off road diesel

3. Marine diesel

4. Road diesel

Is 1-3 pretty much the same? An earlier post stated choices in sulfer levels for 2 & 3, what are sulfer levels for 1? I always though increased sulfer levels is better, but it sounds like the electronic ISB's aren't prepared to deal with it.

I've been asked about this stuff before and dunno much about it, can ya tell?

Thanks,

-JC
