Well, I knew it was coming. I bought my '99 CTD 2. 5 years ago with 56K and now it just turned 122K. I knew the transmission was going to eventually die, but I started flirting with the idea of a 3rd gen and 48RE instead of dumping $$ into this truck so I tried to sell it. I had a deal, shook on it, then his wife called and bailed on the deal.
As if that's not enough, the very next day the transmission starts slipping. Over the next 50 miles it stops shifting into second without letting off the throttle. I tighten the front band... no adjustment left. Phone call to J&H in Redding and my DTT upgrades are now scheduled for March 21. Oo.
So, now that I'm about to sink the price of a new Kia into my "old" truck, I'm realizing how nice it will be to have a truck with a solid transmission, and how I'll be better off anyways because I won't have to re-buy my stereo, line-x, leer top, etc. But the money-sucking-bug won't leave me alone, because I know that once the transmission is done I'm obviously going to have to add some more power. However, the MOST important thing to me is reliability and longevity. I don't want to be stranded 200 miles from nowhere with a blown VP44.
I'm thinking about a COMP box with the pump wire left disconnected (so i could turn it off and just use it as a boost fooler if I want) would be pretty good with my 275's and stock turbo. Then perhaps DD3's or EDM's at a later date with a bigger turbo. All this seems pretty easy on the pump, but as we all know, that doesn't mean anything and it can still go at any time... basically I just want to be able to tow my 10K trailer over the Sierras without having to drop under the speed limit, or use 2nd gear on the steep hills like I do now. So here's the question... with the 275RV injectors I already have, what would the best HP per $ upgrade be?
