Just saw this on the news... nobody seems to know how a train drove itself out of the yard with nobody on board. It went 67 miles till another train caught up with it and stopped... whewwww.. . maybe kat has some info for us... ... JB

Anythings possible. If y'all only knew what went on sometimes #ad

Ohio is not our tracks tho, so I am "Guessing" its IC or CSX railroad. I'll have to look? When did this happen? I'm too tired to look it up now going on my 29th hour of being up as we speak. I'll get back to ya on it JB soon as I can.

The news report I heard said the engineer had a heart attack. Also said that another engine caught up with it, latched on, then someone crawled over to the runaway and applied the brakes. Sounded a little like Indiana Jones.

The news I saw on TV showed the train moving slowly and showed several people running alongside it on the right side. One of them jumped onto the right front steps and went across to the left side and into the cab. The person doing this then brought the train to a stop.

A spokesperson for the railroad did state that the locomotive was equiped with a dead man's switch but would not speculate as to why it did not stop the train.

Also have 1984 Volvo D260 with inline 6 diesel made by Volkswagen.

On ABC news last night they showed video of a cop trying to blow a hole in the locomotive's fuel tank with a shotgun at a grade crossing. Gee, who'd think a fuel tank made to hold over a 1000 gallons of fuel would be shotgun resistant! He should've aimed for the air hose between the cars.

Evidently they're saying the train got away from a yard with no one in it. I suspect there's more to the story. It was indeed a CSX and from the fuzzy video looked to be a single EMD SD-40-2 locomotive.

They slowed it down by having another locomotive couple on to the rear and applied it brakes to slow the consist down enough for a man on the ground to hop aboard (didn't I see this in one of those horrible made-for-TV movies?). Brave sole--it's easy to miss and slip under the wheels.

Quite a story.

Folks,

If I understand right, there was an engineer at the helm who had died of a heart attack.

It's amazing how many times the story changes. The local news here said that it occured during a shift change of some sort and that there was no one in the engine at all. Guess we'll have to wait to see what the real story is.

You guys should be like me!! Just went to an Ear,Nose,&Throat Doctor and he said my hearing "sux". Now I have a medical reason for my "selective" hearing. Only problem is though he wants me to get two hearing aids. I guess if I do that so much for selective hearing... .....

Hi all, i am a CSX locomotive engineer so this story is all over the office. Nobody died, what happened was the conductor was off the engine so when a swicth was improperly lined for the train, the engineer got off the engine to throw it, when he did, he did not properly set the brakes. So the train took off. That engine did not have an Alertor which will dump the brakes if nobody resets it every 45 seconds (most of our engines do). The police tried to shoot out the air hoses, but failed. Shooting a fuel tank is worthless since the train will roll regardless if the engine is running. Not to mention they will have 3000 gallons of fuel spilled. That is the story we were told by our trainmaster. Once i can confirm that it is the TRUTH, i will post it here. Needless to say, that engineer is fired. Not that i did not before, but i will be DOUBLE checking my brakes the next time i get off the engine!.

TomC, you should be 26 and lost that much hearing. Thanks to the US NAVY, I've lost over 30% of my hearing. At least that's my excuse. #ad

BTW-I turn 29 in a week.

Take what ever you see/hear on TV with a big dose of salt.
Many times, during a trial where there was enough interest to bring the press out, at the end of the day I have watched the report of the trial on TV and wondered if it was the same one I was trying.
Or have been interviewed by news people about some trial or issue and when watching the TV version wondered how the H--- they edited what I said to come out that way. The last 10 years on the bench, I refused all interview request unless I could do it live so that it could not be edited to either change the meaning or fit some wierd angle they were after. It is really something how they can take a sentence from here and one from another place and a third from someplace else and put them together to make great changes in the meaning of what you said, while useing your very words.
And when challenged about it, be all innocent and claim they had no such intent.
I have learned to consider newspeople only INTERTAINMENT people who's only real interest is to make a story sell; never mind accuracy, or reliability.
Sorry about that soap box; its been a bur under my saddle for years. And there is no winning a p===== match with the people who buy their ink by the barrell.

Kat, my Dad worked for Con rail some years back. Heard plenty stories of the engineer backing his PU truck into the bay, then being carried onto the train. #ad

Oh, this wasnt freight, this was passenger!!
