Below are my oil results on 1999 Ram ISB with 38K miles. Amsoil DualBypass filter at 30K with 8K on 5W30Series3000 Heavy Duty Diesel Amsoil oil. I took the result after running the engine to operating temp, filling a cup full of oil, then filling the test cup. One thing which I did notice was my petcock on the bypass was sideways, thus oil was flowing over the petcock into the cup. Could this contribute to the high copper? And should I be worried about it?

JOE: Universal averages show typical wear metals for an oil from this type engine after a routine oil run. Your oil was in use 8,000 miles longer than the 5,800 miles that is an average oil use run

for the type and we found all wear except copper at around average levels and in the correct balance to show normal mechanical parts inside. Copper may show a crack or other problem at a bronze part. Air and oil filtration look okay. This was 15W/40 diesel-use engine oil with no fuel,moisture or anti-freeze in it. Use 8,000 mi oil use next sample. Copper may drop on its own.

Been lots of discussion on this over the last year, normally points to the oil cooler. Do a search on "copper" and some reading.

Are you sure it was your oil they looked at? It shows you submitted 5W30 and they analyzed 15W40???
 
My observation is that it is not uncommon to see reports of high copper and/or high aluminum on the first sample or two after installation of a new oil filter system. Screwing and unscrewing connections; maybe some copper from "metallic dust" inside the new fittings, or something like that. If in your shoes, I'd change the full flow filter (if not done at the 8k sample time), top up, and sample again at about 5k miles with another filter change at that time. I'll bet copper doesn't go up much, and might even be down a bit. Also, when I went 10k before a filter change, my numbers jumped up, when I dropped back to 5k between filter changes, I started seeing numbers I liked again. Amsoil says 7. 5k, but I don't like going that long. I'm changing full flow every 5k, bypass at 15k or 10k depending on my mood.

Gary, it must of gotten thicker in the old CTD :-laf :-laf I wonder by the next test if it will be 45W60 :confused:

This is something i also chased for a while. I did as most everyone suggest and changed the oil cooler and a few other little things, but it was not until i rebuilt the turbo(myself) that my copper started on it's way down.

I credit oil sampling with saveing me the cost of a new turbo!

Believe it or not another source of copper can be the sealing washer on the oil pan drain plug as the sample oil passes over a partially open plug. I wouldn't doubt if your petcock could have contributed to your high copper. Next time drain a few cups to flush it and dump the oil back in your engine.
