Sorry if this is old news. I just cant seem to find anything to help me read my oil analysis. Is there a site or a post that would help me to better understand the reading?

Thanks for the help

Troy

I sure can... ...

This is Delo 400 15w40 oil changed after 7000 miles. With the much debated K&N filter in the stock airbox.

Iron 30

Aluminum 3

copper 6

Silicone 74 <--------------not good I know

Sodium 3

Boron 1

Calcium 3590

Phosphorus 1376

Zinc 1702

Fuel . 5

Soot <. 1

Water <. 1

Thanks for the help... ... ;)

what is the viscosity at 100 degrees celcius?

TBN or total base number?

Did you have any engine work done were or could have been sealers were used?

Don~

Yeah, that silicon # is way high unless you had recent work done on the engine. (which I doubt) Are you pouring spoonfulls of sand into your engine or what? :D :D :--)

silicone

Nothing has been done to the motor other than driven hard. Im not sure if the K&N is at fault.

If I dont run the K&N what are my other options?

Thanks

My Silicon

Readings on the pass two samples has been 10 and 11 ppm. And I run the K&N filter with the prefilter.

IMO, the numbers you posted look pretty good (other than the obvious silicon) especially for 7000 miles on dino 15w40. I'm also curious as to what your TBN wasl? Did you change the filter in the 7000 miles?

Another air filter option is the Amsoil 2-stage foam filter that fits in the stock airbox. Cleanable and reusable and flows pretty well but not as much as the Mega Cannon. I am runnig the Amsoil and it filters very well. Costs less than $45 I believe for "non members. "

Thepitts... . You mentioned you run a prefilter. Are you using the cone style filter? I thought about making a pre filter to go in the airbox hoping this would help. I put the stock aircleaner back in and man did those EGT's go up. Almost a 200deg increase upo a 9% grade under heavy acceleration.

TBN???? Have no idea what that is and there was nothing on the analysis. The oil filter was not changes in the 7000 miles.

As far as the silicone reading... ... what is considered a normal or safe reading? 8-10?

Thanks again for the input.

Troy

TBN = Total Base Number. It is an indication of the oil’s remaining ability to neutralize acids. TBN goes down with continued oil usage. Many oil analyzers charge extra for this measurement. With a non-EGR equipt diesel engine using CH-4 or CI-4 rated oil and anything approaching a normal change interval, the TBN will always be fine. It will drop if there is antifreeze contamination, but most places test for antifreeze anyway.

Single digit silicon numbers are ideal. The K&N story is actually very simple despite all the different opinions you may read on this board. They either work well or they work poorly. The problem stems from either a poor installation in the stock airbox (which can be tricky) or a defective filter. I have had several bad ones over the years. The cone type filters or the very large paper filters seem to be the best solution for EGT problems. I run the Amsoil now myself. It give lower EGTs than stock, but not as low as the K&N. I live in a dust bowl and now see only 5-6 ppm silicon after 7,500 miles. I once had 30 ppm with a K&N like yours.

Your analysis provides further evidence that Delo is just about the best conventional oil out there. Only 30 ppm iron with 76 ppm silicon contamination is very impressive.

Thanks for all the advice. It really helps. Im tossing the K&N and looking into something to replace it. Gonna look at the Amsoil filter.

Dave you made referance to a foam filter. Where can I look at one of these?

Thanks again.

His Mine

Silicone 74 <--------------not good I know 3

Sodium 3 3

Boron 1 38

Calcium 3590 3478

Soot <. 1

Water <. 1 0. 0

Mine was also Delo 15W40 with 5273 miles (total miles 82,107) and using K&N Air Filter Boron seems way out of line, but I don't know why. Suggestion from BlackStone was to go 7,500 miles on next oil, but I just changed at 6,000. Waiting on results from it.
