Oil Brand to use ...confused!

I just read a post in the 2d gen forum. That blasted castrol and quarker state oil. why such a hit on these 2? I use syntac in my truck why is this wrong.



please leave a commnet as to why these are bad and what I should use and why.

The important point is to use an oil which meets the SAE rating called out in your owners manual. If you look at this thread, you will see what others are using:

I think by far the three most used brands by TDR members are Delo, Rotella and Amsoil.

At one point I used Castrol synthetic in my cars and chevy 6. 2 diesel and was happy with it. When I bought the cummins I called castrol and asked if it could be used in the cummins and they recommended against it, so I stopped using it. I am not sure why, they just said would was not rated for use in that engine.

oil choices

There are TDR guys who work in the oil business and they can correct this if Im wrong... . The Castrol Synth is just fine for its intended use... . I've got no beef with it. Q-State's oils are parafin-based and will gum up an engine quickly. Years ago I owned a V-6 Mazda. The old-timer tech at my local dealership advised that just topping up with 1/2 Qt of Quakerstate would gum up my lifters in a matter of a couple hundred miles and pound the valve train to death! Not good in the turbo cooler lines... . Play it safe: Delo, Rotella, Amsoil, etc... dont take chances with an expensive motor to save a few bucks. Just MHO, but sound advise, I think.

I just bought 6 gallons of delo 400 for $33. 69

at costco. Now I just need a filter What do you guys use?

Get the Fleetguard from Geno's or your local Cummins. The OEM filter probably will be fine too... it looks suspiciously like a Fleetguard to me.

I use Delo 400 and think it's an excellent oil.



You won't find the kind of oil filter you want at Costco.



Get a Fleetguard # LF3894 oil filter. This is also called the Stratapore filter.



Get a Fleetguard # FS19579 fuel filter, too.

I use Valvoline Premium Blue. It's available at Kragens in gallon jugs. That's what Cummins uses.

I have used Rotella in most all of my diesels and Fleetguard filters, i use Amsoil Synthetic now and a dual bypass in my Ram though.
