oil burning smell after oil change

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but I couldn't find it during my search.



After changing my oil in my '97, I have an oil burning smell that comes from the engine for about the next 1000 miles or so, then goes away. The only time I can smell it is after I've driven the truck and parked it. When you open the door, the smell wafts up from under the rocker panels. I am very meticulous about changing my oil, I let it drain for a least 4 hours. I also make sure I fill the new filter with fresh oil, and I don't overfill the crankcase. The engine is clean and there isn't any drips on my driveway. The smell started about a year ago, at about 60,000 miles. I am using Royal Purple 15W-40 and the appropriate Cummins filter.

It's common and varies in intensity depending on the brand of oil. I'm told the smell is the burning off of an oil component used to keep the oil's additives in suspension during storage.

I have been using Rotella on my 24v, and when I change the oil, the truck stinks like burning oil for a couple hundred miles too. However, I used Rotella in my 95 and never had any smell. I cant wait to get more miles on it to switch to synthetic.

jtisdale, kinda thought it was funny, (your avatar). Really could come in usefull in some threads. My first oil change I thought I screwed something up with the smell. Found out was normal. Other threads, some people like the smell. Can't wait for next oil change. To each thier own.

My truck has the smell for about 500 miles I use rotella question I have is this On my 93 cummins I used rottela also and never had this smell??? I at first change with my new truck thought I had made a mess some where but its just normal? seems odd to me but I am not going to loose sleep over it.
