Hi idle 4th gen ?

Auto level in 3500 diesel

Wow I did a search about oil bypass systems and got a ton of posts. Oddly enough I could not find anything that covered the basic information about bypass systems. I am very new to the Cummins engine world but I have had Several Ram trucks. What I am looking for is do these systems perform as well as advertised and is there a downside to them? What about warranty issues? Any help or direction would be much appreciated. Thanks

Welcome and Happy New Years!

What year of Cummins do you have? If it's new, it might be best to wait until the warranty is up before adding the by-pass. But then again, maybe your service dealer has common sense and will not have a problem with it, as it only helps to keep the oil cleaner for longer periods.

I have never added one, but it's always been on the to do list. I know of several people that use by-pass systems and they all swear by them. If I were to make the time to install one, I'd probably piece it together to create a custom setup and save a few bucks.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I have a 2015 Ram 2500 with the 6.7

i did try try a couple of searches to see if Mopar recommended a system. I know Harley has some after market stuff they recommend that won't create any warranty issues. But I couldn't find anything either way. The premise and thought process make total sense to me but as you said I absolutely don't want get into a situation where a tech at a dealer causes my VIN to get flagged.

I am not a fan of Kidney Loop systems, that is what is known as a by-pass system in layman terms. I spent 40 years in engineering at Cat with the last 20 years doing hydraulic design systems on machines. The problem with kidney loop system is they do not do full filtration of the oil 100% of the time. The Kidney loop system will clean only a % of the oil at any given time with the rest of the dirty oil being return to the component that the filter is cleaning the oil for. This sludge is then deposited in the component somewhere over time this will cause tiny oil passages to be closed off due to the sludge. Now if Kidney loop systems where so great don't you think Cummins/Caterpillar would have embraced them on their diesel engines design.

At Cat some of the smaller design machines where built with Kidney loop systems! Why? The hydraulic tanks where too small to offer full-flow return oil filtration with the filters in their tanks. Thus, the kidney loop system was used but component life was shorter on these machines.

It is your $$$ and your truck so you can do what you like; but I wouldn't spend the money on something like that. Put your money in something else that will benefit the truck and you more. Advertisers just want to separate you from your money. Just my opinion.

Any mod should be looked at as will it the risk out weigh the benefit, Fca will not increase the oil change interval and you can not filter out fuel contamination. There will be no worthwhile benefit.

Just run the better Strataphore fleetgaurd oil filter . Bypass filters only filter when engine is idling .

I agree with Bob and p-Bar. The engine will last a very long time with stock filtration, especially with the better stratapore filter. Change it on the stock intervals or sooner. That means every 15k or 6 months at a minimum. I don't go over 6-7k miles.

I believe the extended oil change intervals, are EPA recommended or regulated to help reduce the amount of waist oil, and not because brand X has better oil and filtration. My 2010, 2014 & 2016 Toyotas I have purchased, doubled the oil change intervals using the same oil and filters. I have only had dealers service these with my 2016 Tacoma getting its first oil change at 5K miles as all the others have gotten. The prepaid or free maintenance plans for these vehicles as well as recommended oil change intervals are at 10K. I pay for the oil change every 5K, because the service intervals are at 5K for other related service. The 2014 CTD I drove had its oil change when the EVIC said oil change was due @15K because the owner of it saved money and looked at it as business issue. My 07 CTD gets it at 5K or @ 6mo., I wouldn't hurt the warranty of any new CTD by bypassing the oil for any reason, good or bad. Just change oil and filter earlier than recommended and save the engine life, the costs are pennies on the dollar if you look at the overall benefit of increasing the intervals at what used to be the recommended interval.
