Having a problem with my back so I took the truck to the dealer for a oil change. They said it took 13 quarts and always use 13 quarts in the Cummins. This last issue of the TDR said 13 quarts. My owners manual says 12 quarts. I have always put 12 in it and the dipstick shows full. I am including the oil filter in these quantities.

11 quarts crankcase 1 qt oil filter = 12 qts = 3 gallons this is what I've done since I have owned the truck, bought it new. The last oil change I did same "oh" routine add 12 qts and it showed about 1/8 inch over full mark, all the other times it has been dead on the money at the full mark with 12 qts added.

I have heard other members state that the dealership said it was suspose to hold 13 qts I don't know where they (dealership) are getting their info though.

12 quarts, I doubt you could find it printed 13 anywhere in either Dodge or Cummins manuals.

The only time I could think of where it could take 13 would be after a complete rebuild where all the oil had been removed.

I was at the local dealer the other day over my power steering leak and saw a word processed printout on the wall with oil capacities ... ... ..... 5. 9 Cummins was listed as 12 qts and penciled in by hand at 13. 5 qts.

It's probably because they don't wait long enough for the oil to drain back before checking it, so they end up overfilling it instead. Stupid.

i prime my filter and then pour the rest of that 4 liter bottle in the sump, plus 2 more. i let them drip for a few minutes to get most of the oil out of the jugs, and that's it. i don't know how accurate the 4 liter amount is in the bottles [bottles are identical to us gallon jugs]

I buy three gallons and don't check it. While the pan is draining, I put a little out of each of the 3 gallon jugs into the new filter (makes easier dumping) and dump the remainder of the 3 gallons into the pan ... ... ..... done deal, I don't even check the dipstick. But the note on the wall said 13. 5 qts
