I'm with Joe G. A hammer and a big flat blade screw driver on the lip pops it off every time. Works great on the oil filter, too. :D :D

I'm just wondering why you would change the oil so frequently?

According to a petroleum engineer I spoke to, the detergent in

the oil doesn't start working until 3,000 or so miles. He said you

will actually have a build up of contaminants if you change it too

often. That is why most manufacturers recommend changing

the oil every 7,500 miles.

I thought I read a thread one time that was talking about how all the extra fueling breaks down a viscosity property or something in the oil? I may be wrong I dont know.

I would like to hear more about this.

I am moving alot of fuel, and I know that there has to be alot of fuel byproducts and soot going into the case.

O ya, and to install the filter i use a strap wrench. (The one with the really big rubber band) And to remove it i use the oil filter channel lock pliers.

exactly... even if it was free I wouldn't change my oil any earlier than 5k. With the advanced detergents and additives, coupled with the excellent filter technology changing the oil that often is not only a waste it could be detrimental. Then again, most people get a new truck every 2 years or so, so who really cares? CHange it all the time, or don't at all... . it'll still work for that long.

Oil Filter

One of the best filter wrenched is a strap wrench that uses a 3/8 ratchet extension. It's easy to put on and works on any size filter. Good for clearing obstructions too.

Also, I place a gallon size plastic bag under the oil filter and use it to hold and catch the filter as it comes loose. No drips at all this way.

Don't forget to fill the new filter first with fresh oil; gets the oil to the bearings faster on start-up.

Thanks for remminding me it's time to change MY oil.

I have 155000k on my truck and change it every 6000k. From what I can see inside the engine when I pulled the valvecovers off to adjust the valves it still looks clean. No build up of contaminates. The only time I would change sooner is if I drove through a dusty climate. ;)

I'm with Mombo. I do mine exactly the same with a strap. Comes off no problem. Change oil every 5,000 miles. Overfueling may require more often.

You guys are still on this subject?

That crap about changing the oil every 1000-3000 miles being detrimental to the engine because the detergents in the oil have not yet been released is new one on me. I'd like to see someone back that up with some factual proof that it causes problems.

No one can or will convince those that wan't or can change oil at less or more than the recomded intervel ,some if the oil is free or cheap (to them) will change oil like dirty underware. Others like me can not afford to change as often . And we think longer is better. cheeper, Also saves the ... ... ... ... ..... you put in the word. Ron Bissett in Metro Louisville Ky Rotella T, every 7500 mi.
