I'm going to change both my truck's oil within the next 2 weeks and am looking for suggestions for which brand oil to use. I'm not looking to start a brand war, just what you personally use and how you like it (smells, expensive, etc).

I'm also mildly curious as to the bennie of synthetic oils in the Cummins. I don't think I will go this route, but am more curious than anything.

Thanks.

Toby

You'll get lots of comments. I believe in synthetics, but I refuse to buy synthetics and change at the recommended intervals as its too expensive. If you extend the change intervals, you may cause potential warranty arguments. The synthetics obviously work, or they wouldn't tell you not to use them during break-in (citing longer break-in, ie. less wear) If and when I decide to go synthetic, I'll likely use Amsoil.

For now I use Chevron Dello 400. It has a good reputation, meets CI-4 and is sold by my local Cummins dealer, where I also get my Fleetguard Stratapore filters.

Other good choices would be Rotella and Valvoline Premium Blue (Cummins factory fill).

Cheers

Dave

Delco 400 15W40,Shell Rotella 15W40,Mobile Delvac,Valvoline Premium Blue 15W40(factory oil) are a few. Go to http://www.amsoil.com/ if you want to know anything about Amsoil. If you decide to go to a synthetic wait till you have from 10000-20000 on it to change. I am running the Valvoline Premium Blue 15W40 now but probably the next oil change I will swith to Amsoil 15W40. Use a good oil filter to. You can get all the Fleetguard you need form Genos. It is just what you want to use in it.

Synthetics are great and very expensive. If you can go 25 or 30000 miles between changes it works out ok,but if your like me around 8000 miles you start wondering how your synthetic oil is doing,so you send in a oil sample and then another at say 20000 miles. I found it isn't worth the hassle so I'm running Delo 400 15/40 and I buy it at Costco.

I would be exactly like that... 8000 miles and I'd start wondering what was going on in the oil arena.

I think I'll venture out to Wally World and Costco and see what they have to offer in the oil selections... I ordered 2 filters from Geno's yesterday too!

I bought Delo 400 at Wally World. Man, sometimes that place scares me. Anyway, I bought 4 gallons and that was all they had on the shelf. I'm going to give that a try.

Thanks everyone for taking the time out of your busy day to chime in.

got rotella 5w 40 full synthetic today at wallyworld for 12 bux a gallon!

I have used the Rotella 15w40 for years with no complaints or problems. Sam's or Wally World for around $36 a case last time I bought some. I 4/2 filter kit from Geno's for $60.

I've used Rotella 15-40 on all my diesels. No problems. It's only about 6. 50 a gallon, and I now use three gallons on my 2004. I get my oil filters from the dealer. They work fine, and the dealer can't ever deny warrenty if it fails. They are about $9. So, $28. 50 every 5,000 miles. That's what I do.

I just got this truck, and it has 3500 miles on it. I changed the oil at 2000 (was still honey-colored, as expected), and I'll do it again 3,000 miles later, at 5,000. Then, every 5,000 miles from there on out. I'm not sure I'll go for the recommended 7,500 or 15,000 miles like the manual says. But, if I look at it and it still looks like honey, I'll stretch it out some. The oil in my other trucks was dark after 3,000, and very black after 4,000 miles. I always changed it at 5,000 intervals. No probs.

Hope this helps.

I was using delvac 1, I just plain got tired of spending the money on that stuff, I hope the rotella syn is good enough as in I mean it does not say CI anywhere on the jug. I know alot of the people here swear by the 15w 40 so I figure all will be well ;)

I'd have to say you'll be fine, when I bought mine new I drove from texas to michigan and back and then changed the oil, It has not ever used any oil between changes. I think that was good for seating the rings properly!

It all helps.

Thank you to all of you.

Another dumb question that I'm really showing my laziness and inability to pry my lazy butt away from the computer and go look in the manuals... ... .....

2001. 5 How much oil should I put in with a new filter?

2004 Same lazy question?

I think I'll go have a beer and wait for the answer... ... . geez, I'm feeling fat and lazy tonight!:D

I won't make any suggestions about which oil to use. Just passing on some info that I found helpful when changing the oil on my 3g. Due to the location of the oil filter, I first losen the oil filter then take a good ( no holes ) plastic grocery bag and cover the filter prior to removal. I find that this keeps the alternator clean and oil free.

2003 SLT 3500 CC/SWB 305/555 48RE

last time I checked, Walmart and AutoZone were selling their oils for the same price. I use Rotella 15w40. Probably a holdover from when I work for Shell Oil company. They RIFF'd me out the door back in '91 so I don't think much of them anymore. Oil is still good tho...

All the name brands are good oils. Keep it clean and change on regular intervals.

for what it's worth..

I've been doing personal research on synthetics for years, and I just happened to read a lab report comparison today, Amsoil 3000 (5w-30) vs the best non-synthetics. It said that Rotella 15w-40 is the best of the non-synthetics, overall. I'm not going to quote numbers, but it was above the others in all tested categories, with Delo 400 15w-40 next best. I used Delo until I changed to the Amsoil full flow system and the 3000 series 5w-30, and it seemed to do fine. I changed every 4k miles, and I push my CTD pretty hard. If I was going to baby it I would have bought a F-150!! The main reasons I went to the Amsoil were that our trucks have turbos, and non-synthetics will 'coke up' in the turbo alot quicker, and at significantly lower temps than Amsoil. Also I run hard and long, and sometimes if I'm on a trip (towing) it just isn't practical to get an oil change when there's a trailer hooked on the back. Amsoil has an analysis program and it may not be a whole lot cheaper, but it is a little cheaper, than changing the Delo or Rotella, and the filter, at 4k miles, but it sure does save the time and hassle. I do it myself, so by the time I go to Wal-Mart for the oil and filter, which they always had on the shelf and Auto Zone had the oil but not the filter (FRAM), get back home, crawl under it, open the drain after I find a 3 gallon pan flat enough to slide under the truck (a kitty litter pan is the only thing I found that works, other than a $50 "professional" metal pan), drain the oil, remove the filter, fill the new filter with new oil and screw it into place, refill the crankcase, then I have to fill 3 empty jugs with used oil and drive to Auto Zone to dump it in their recycling tank, etc. , etc. I pull 4,000 miles in a month, give or take a week, so if I kept doing what I was doing I spent half of my spare time changing oil. The facts are, synthetics work, they last longer and lubricate better, they are waaay better in a turbocharged engine, they enhance fuel mileage and offer a small percentage of power increase, due to less internal friction, and if you get a regular analysis, it is less costly to maintain your diesel workhorse in the long run. I do admit it might not be for everyone. If you run about 1000 miles a month, the average for most personal use trucks, I can see where it would take longer for you to realize a savings than it does for me. I get an analysis, change filters on a regular basis, and use the same oil for 25 thousand miles, maybe longer if the analysis indicates it. I know of one driver that has 50,000 miles on the same oil, with just filter changes and analysis so far. I know, it's hard to believe. On the other hand, I don't know anyone that takes better maintenance care of their truck than I do, and if it works for me, it must be pretty good stuff. There might be someone that takes better care of their rig than me. I just haven't ever met him! In summary, whether or not Amsoil is for you is a personal decision, based on your driving, monthly mileage driven, if you tow frequently or none at all, and how you feel about down time and maintenance. If someone has a CTD and doesn't tow or carry a heavy load with it, they would be better off with a 1500 or a--I hate saying this--F 150. In case I haven't made it plain, I'm talking about the Amsoil extended drain interval system, with 2 filters and routine analysis, not just driving for umpteen thousand miles on the same oil and filter. Ok, I'm getting off the soapbox now. I thought I'd throw some opinions, experience, and optional ideas into the discussion. I fully expect to get a million miles from my CTD, no BS, and the oil program I'm using will go a long way towards that goal. I know other drivers that have done it, so I know it is possible.

hey CAKUZ, please see my reply to your PM. Also, since you mentioned it, I'm not asking what filter you use, but rather, what was your criteria for selection? Anything scientific, a comparison test by a source you know you can trust? Or something else? If you have info to share, please do.

thanks, Dave
