Oil Change Cost?

It costs me about $30. $7. 00 per gallon for Delo 400 at Wallyworld and $9. per filter from Geno's. I change it every 4000 miles and that's a little overkill considering my driving. As far as the drain plug goes I just use a 4 gallon bucket and unscrew the drain plug far enough to get a good flow without unscrewing it all the way and loosing it in the bucket, crawl out from under the truck and give it a few minutes to drain then take plug out completely. I use the filter pliars even though it's hard to get any leverage on the thing but it works ok. The plastic baggie trick on the filter is the way to go!! I also fill the filter before install.

I tend to agree with bighammer that pre-filling the filter may not be necessary, but doesn't hurt. Anyone who has ever let their oil drain overnight before removing the filter will notice the filter is less than half full anyway, it siphons out. Also makes a plastic bag unnecessary. I have several half million mile tractors with upright filters that drain 100% at each shut down, sure doesn't seem to have effected them. Couldn't prefill the filters even if I wanted to.

I don't have the room for an oil change at home, my local mech does it for $10 as long as I bring in the filter and oil. I use Fleetgaurd filters and amsoil.



Fuel filter is changed 12 to 15k.

Do it yourself. Once upon a time I took my truck in for a check/re-flash of the ECM. I figured it was only a 10 minute job. After about 20 minutes I walked out to check on progress, spot my truck at the other end in a service bay and the monkey is draining my oil. Good Valvoline dino lube ( I didn't go to Amsoil until close to 50K miles) at that. After getting it re-filled, they were unable to do the check/re-flash because the scanner was down. I never took it back for the check. I do all of my oil changes. It's a great way to take a 20 minute job and relax for four or so hours checking up on your truck; i. e. , tightening hoses, checking for leaks, lube fittings, etc.

Lots of guys around here do not subscribe to the theory that it is in fact just a truck, many more out there like it, and easily replaced if necessary. If you have an oil burning furnace in your house, dump the used oil in the furnace tank. Recyle at home.
