7500 Mile Oil Changes ?

new truck research

Hey guys, my EVIC lit up at 4600 miles to change the oil on my truck. I am not ready to change the oil just yet. Anyone know how to reset this or do I have to go to the stealership and have them do it?

Your owner's manual probably describes the procedure. It is often done with a cycle of pressing the accelerator pedal.

Why wouldn't you change the oil?

The EVIC is based on a fuel dilution calculation, and shouldn't be ignored if your emissions are intact, especially on a new motor that is more prone to putting fuel in the oil.

If you're running on the factory oil, you MUST change it. The most particulate occurs during the first few oil changes due to engine break in. (especially the 1st) If you want to gamble the life of your engine on a 50$ oil change, then by all means, go for it.

oh, and I usually drive 200-300miles on the oil warning before changing, its no big deal. just dont reset it and forget to change.

When your light comes on you should be close to 5% fuel in the oil. The dealer scan tool can read how long since the message was reset, so if your going to risk extending the interval, your going to get busted if you have an oil related failure and can't show proof of service. Since I have never seen a Cummins have an oil related failure, your probably going to get busted anyway. But it's your truck and your money, so go for it!

sounds good

It sounds like I should change my oil soon. I did not know about this since this is my first 6. 7L. I just wanted to reset the reminder on the dash. I didn't realize the 6. 7 was so much different for oil changes. According to the owners manual it states that you should not exceed 7500 miles or 6 months. Guess I will have to order some oil & fuel filters from Geno's. I do have a new leftover oil filter from my '05 truck. Will a 5. 9 oil filter work on a 6. 7 ?

There are two limits on the oil for the 6. 7, its the shorter of either 7,500 miles or when the EVIC tells you to change it.

What is the part number for the oil filter? But it should work.

I have seen oil analysis reports on the 6. 7L Engine that have only <0. 5% fuel in the oil with 3,500 miles on the oil. I'm not saying all of the 6. 7L engines are going to dilute the oil with fuel with fewer miles, but just pointing out that they are not all the same, regardless of what the computer is saying. The very best way to see oil dilution is by useing oil analysis!

Was that recently or several years ago? I know that Dodge/Cummins have made several changes over the last few years trying to improve the estimation, based on testing by them. I know its just an estimation and will be wrong, but hopefully its better than that!

I'm just waiting for the 100,000 mile mark for my mileage to improve and to stop the fuel dillution of the oil. :D

Only the earliest trucks were off, and then not by much. I have sampled dozens of trucks, and so far the light is very accurate. That is why I'm so passionate about the oil change reminder, because it is right way more then it is wrong. On the same subject, the lab I use charges extra for fuel dilution, so until I found that out all my samples came back <2%

Question. I did a search and found this because I have the message to change the oil. I changed the oil at around 2000 miles, and again at 5,000. I now have 7500 miles on the truck, and wasn't planning on changing it until I have 10,000 on it. I didn't know about resetting the message when I changed it the first two times, so my question is, did the message just come on at a certain time/mileage point, or is it actually sensing something?

Thanks
