I have changed my oil several times and the hand book says 11 quarts of oil but even after filling the oil filter before installing all I can get is 9 quarts. Is this right? I check the oil level after filling back up and not starting the engine because of the oil staying in the pump area so long. I have checked the oil after the change, after a few days and the level is ok my fear is that I may not have enough oil in the engine while running is this possible or not. I do most all my own work on all of my vehicles I own or have owned but I seem to worry more about this Dodge Cummins than any other vehicle I have owned, must just be extra special. big grin

You might have a dipstick problem, 11 qt's should be right. Remember, it takes an hour or so for the oil in the pump to drain back into the pan, so forget the "quickie" oil changes. Put it in the garage hot, pull the plug, & let it drain over night. Refill in the morning. I used to pour the entire three gallons in mine on a change, but lately have been using 11 qts.

I do it the same way Dennis does. Drain over night. I put 11 quarts in it and it's right on the full mark. I think I remember something about some of these trucks haveing a dipstick mark problem. You should check with your dealer about it. Or search the archives on these forums for more information.

Hummm... ... . I have checked mine all so and found that 12 quarts puts my oil level right on the full mark... . I know the book said 11 but I rather be over by one than under! I think 12 is right on for my truck

I have never let mine drain overnight, but do drain hot and let it drain for at least one hour. Always 11qts 10 in the crankcase and one in the filter. I always fill my filter before installing.

I do not know what I had been looking at or doing on past oil changes but after posting and then reading the first two reply's I called a Dodge service tech and he said he had not heard or seen anything about the dip sticks and several hours later went back out and checked oil level and it was 1 quart low that was after putting in 10 qts. of oil :O so never mind and now I feel really stupid but at least it got a discussion going #ad
. Thanks everybody for responding so quickly now I think I will just go and turn off the lights and sit.
