Changed every 20,000 miles on my '01 Ram. NO bypass filtration. Sampled every 10k. Ran synthetic, Amsoil and Delvac 1.

On the current truck going 5000 miles on Delo 400. Trying Rotella Syn right now though.

I change my oil and filters every June. I also take an oil sample prior to the oil change and so far every one that I've sent in came back with a recommendation to continue using the oil and resample at a later date. I change it anyway because once a year isn't too much of a hassle. I usually put between 15K - 20K miles in a year. I run Amsoil 15-40 Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine oil with the Fleetguard filters and the Amsoil bypass filter. I also change the Fleetguard filter every six months. Truck has 154,000 miles and runs better than the day I bought it.

I don't use my truck as often as some of you guys. I change my oil (Amsoil) every 10 thousand miles, and the filter every 5000. Robin

Change when lab say so.

I sample every 5k, change full flow oil filter every 5k, by pass filter every 10k and change oil when lab says to. Got 25k out of last change. Run Amsoil 15w40 year round with a Amsoil single by pass filter and fleetgaurd full flow.

At the high end I probably saved about $300-$400 in oil changes once I figured in cost of oil and filters. This paid for the cost of the by pass and then some.

Just my 2 cents, alot of people dont want to go that long, but if you have the lab reports to back it up why not? In my opions it is a waste of $ and resources to change every 3-7k and I dont think that if you are running 3-5k between changes there probably is no need to sample, unless u really beat the heck out of our truck on a daily basis.

My feelings on the subject exactly. It's not that I mine changing the oil. I enjoy working on my truck and take pride in it. It's just the fact that there is no need in wasting good money by throwing away good oil if it doesn't need to be changed. (and this coming from somebody who's worked in the oilfield for 33 years. ) A good synthetic oil and quality filters last alot longer than 5K or 10K and still outperform the regular oils even after running them that long. The key to this is regular oil samples. Not so much to see the condition of the oil, but to monitor the engine. (antilfreeze, wear metals, silicon, TBN, etc. )

To the guys that are making more horsepower then stock:

Because we are burning more diesel and making more soot (smoke) and because we create more boost and pull more air through the air filter don't you guys see a need for better air and oil filtration as well as oil analysis?

That is the reason I run synthetics, bypass and aFe Progaurd 7 with aFe intake... I feel that since I am making more HP I should keep a closer eye on things and give the engine the highest possible level of protection. I rarely see people here who are making more horsepower ever state that as a potential reason for synthetics, bypass, better air filters and oil analysis.

What do the big HP guys do?? I know my oil will "soot up" much quicker now with bigger injectors.

Thoughts?

Phil

I change mine every 2,000 to 3,000 miles on my pride and joy, oil just gets so black and smoky smelling, I can't stand to go longer. Just changed the oil on my wifes Denali, 9,000 miles on Mobil 1, no worries. :D

In the next few month's you will see a couple of oil Companies come out with oils that will have "Extended" oil change intervals "printed" on the containers. I wonder where they picked up on that idea? MAybe "AMSOIL". They have been doing this for over 30 years! :D

I use Valvoline Premium Blue and change itand the filter at 7500 with some towing involved. I had it sampled at about 23,000 and it was fine. I have 66,000 and will do it soon again. I never even add oil between changes. Where is the bypass filter?

Diesel Dog,

The By Pass filter is a seperate after market filter that many install. Filters down to a much smaller particle that the Full Flow filter, which allows you to run the oil longer as there is less particles in the oil that can cause abrasion and wear.

Also this is just my opion, but if I am reading your post correctly u r changing your oil every 7500miles but also doing oil samples? The object of sampling is to sample the oil with out changing it, and only change when the lab says the oil is breaking down(atleast this is my object). I had 25,000 miles on my last oil change, only make up oil was for filter changes, with samples at 5k intervals when the lab said it would be a good idea to change, so I did. If you are changing every 7500miles then I would save the money for sampling as in my opinion it is not a useful tool in that case. Basically if you changed your oil at say 65,000 miles on your rig and then sampled at 66,000 miles you would be sending in a sample with only 1,000miles on it, which is pretty much brand new. Clear as Mud???

Hope this helps,

J-

ps. If I am off them mark here, let me know, I may have mis-read ur post.

I may not have made it clear but I just did one sample at 20??? now I will do it again at 67 or so. I do see what your saying to see how far you can extend it. I'll be doing my Excursion with a PSD soon after 7500 miles to check for fuel. I am doing my 99 Corvette which I road race. I went 1500 track miles on Mobil One and will compare it to what the computer said percentage wise is left it was more than half. I,m doing my Lull with a John Deere 4 cylinder 80 HP. I usually go 100-125 hrs on them. How many microns does the by pass filter go to? What does a Fleet Guard filter to? My hydrualic filter go to 10 microns I think. Thanks!

Diesel Dog,

So u will have 67,000miles on your oil when u sample next? or 67,000miles on your truck, with fewer miles on your oil, if that makes sense.
