So here's another spin on a question that has probably been overly abused. Oil changes... ..... If I read posts correctly the computer gives us the oil change light when there's approx 5% fuel dilution in our oil. With that being said, if you change your oil and filter before the light comes on you shouldn't see a light.

I'm asking basically out of curiosity and I'm sure the computer is taking a bunch of factors into play to determine that. Since there's no way it's analyzing in the block what we have to send to a lab to be analyzed. But my curiosity is increased since I'm currently at 5100 miles on this oil and filter and leaving for a 1700 mile round trip tomorrow. The last half of which will be loaded. I know I should just go outside and do an oil change right now since I've never gone over 4500 miles without getting a light until now. However, now I'm curious as to how far I can go and I'm seriously considering just taking the oil and filter with me and changing when it finally comes on.

I would probably do the same as you. Take oil and filter, get the answer thats bugging me and if it comes on do the change. Keep us updated.

The computer has a program it uses to determine the oil life. It is based on your driving style, how much idling, highway, stop and go, towing, etc. The manual states to change the oil when the EVIC indicates or at 7,500/15,000 miles, depending on type of driving you do. If the indicator is not set when you have an oil change, you will have what appears to be an early indication for an oil change. On both of my trucks, 08 & 10, I have run between 6,000- 9,000 miles between oil changes without issue. Most of the time it is on the 7,500 mark, not when the EVIC tells me to. I usually get the indication to change oil at about the 8,000-8,250 mark, when they don't/forget to reset the indicator

With that being said, if you change your oil and filter before the light comes on you shouldn't see a light.
Only true if you reset the light when you change the oil. The truck has no way to tell the condition of the oil, new or old, but turns the light on based on duty cycle as was already mentioned.

Well I decided to change on the road when the light came on. I got 6100 out of this oil, which is 1500 to 2000 more than any of the others. However I've done way more highway driving this go around. I appreciate everyone's responses.
