This might sound like a silly problem to have but it came to me late the other night. I have a dual AMSOil bypass filter system. I don't change both bypass filters when I service my engine. So both bypass filters contain old oil when I do an oil change. So when I start the engine the new oil enters the bypass filters replacing the old oil. Therefore putting a small amount of dirty oil right back into the engine. What we did today was to fill the crankcase with new oil and remove the oil return that dumps into the top of engine valve cover and place the end into a one gallon oil can and start the engine. We run the engine till the gallon can is full and turn the engine off. We then place a fresh gallon in the crankcase. I then will use the older oil for my chain oil for chainsaw. Why did it take so long for me to think this up.

I have wondered about the minimal oil being left in the crankcase's effect on new oil, so I went thru a big ordeal this last winter getting it all with added changes to see if any real effect was made.

Bottom line is the quart or so that stays in the oil cooler (and more in the filters if not changed) is enough to color the new oil, but not enough to effect anything else. The more used oil you get out the better, but is it worth the cost of a gallon of oil (especially if you use Amsoil)?

The other thing is the oil coming out of the filter may look dirty, it is, and be a little lower on additives but it was just filtered at 2um so it's probably as clean as it can be.

My 4Runner only gets the bypass changed every other oil change, and with oil analysis there was no discernible difference in the oil after a year if the bypass was new or old.

I am using the double bypass and large filters. I am sure it is close to 3 quarts of oil capacity. I am not wasting the oil it is being reused in my chain saw.

you always have old oil in the motor... unless you rebuild every oil change... . would not make a difference in the oil, with that little amount

I don't think any oil is left in the oil cooler, the drain is all down hill. In fact on a stock oil system, I doubt there is more than a cup in the whole engine with a stock oil change.

I pulled nearly a cup out of the head with a syringe, and that was just the head. Based on what drains I think about a quart is left in the block, a long time Cummins mechanic told me most of it is in the cooler. . thou the pic you just posted makes sense with a gravity drain.
