Figured I'd post this since I didn't realize I'm a dumb ***** until I did an unnecessary $60 oil change. A bit of background (sorry if this is a bit long)--I got my current 2012 last Nov. after having an 04. 5 since new. Yesterday my 'Oil Change Due' light came on which I found a little unusual because I had only gone 2400 miles since I last changed it and half of that was towing the 5th wheel and I've been getting better than 5k miles between changes. Anyway, first oil change at 4800 miles was done by dealer and before 'change' light came on so they would have re-set it. Second change was done by me at 9800 miles, again before the light came on (and I apparently re-set the indicator correctly. Next change was at 14,100 miles (done as a precaution as I was hitting the road with the 5th wheel and didn't want the light to come on and I had gone nearly 5000 miles) So, after the 14k change I went through the procedure and figured the indicator was re-set, although I had no real way of telling since it had not come on.

Now, when the 'change' light came on this weekend, I dutifully did an oil change (since the computer is always right, eh?!) Got in the truck, turned the key, pumped accelerator 3 times and turned key off. Then started truck and 'change' light was still on! WTH? Oh, dumb *****, you have to turn the key to 'on', not 'acc'! Did that and light went off. Moral of story-- on my 04. 5, turning the key one 'click' forward turned the ignition 'on' and you had to turn the key one 'click' backward for 'acc'. New truck, one click forward turns it to 'acc' and it takes 2 clicks forward to turn it to 'on'. So, I'm 99% sure that at the 14k change, I just turned the key once (out of habit from my 04. 5) and went through the reset process which actually never reset anything and was unknown to me since the change light had never come on. So those of you who came to a 4th gen from a 3rd gen, pay attention when re-setting if you change oil before the change light comes on or you too may enjoy throwing $60 to the recyclers!!

If that is the worst mistake you have made on your truck, feel very lucky. At least changing the oil more frequently than required is a good if not expensive thing. They said they were looking into a flash to give an indication that the light was reset for those that change before the light comes on. You really have no way of knowing if it reset.

I think the light is not reset if you change oil before the light is on, at least that is my experience with it. I some times change before the light is on and than shortly after it is on. I was told the computer knows mileage and/or time since last change and gives a light based on that.

Thanks Sag, I was wondering if it would re-set if the light had never come on. If it didn't , then I was getting between 6k and 9k between changes which doesn't seem realistic.
