I have the 235 HP 2004 pre-600 California deal. . My oil is filthy after 1000 miles. . Anyone else know why?? Somebody mentioned emmisions. . What emmissions would have such a negative effect on oil contamination?????????? Come back, Marty

Just a guess, but it may be due to the fuel mixture we have in CA. Low sulfur (below 500 ppm now, below 15 ppm by '06) is just one of the things that I know is different. Im not sure what else.

If by "filthy" you mean black I think color is a poor judge of what the oil is truly doing. A lot of Cummins get black oil very quick but according to my oil analisys (Blackstone Labs) everything is doing good, even on my 21000 mile interval I just had!!

One of the by products of combustion of a diesel engine is soot and part of it is carried away by the rings and engine oil..... The oil had additivies to suspend the soot and by products from the combustion process... ... so its trapped by the filter... .

Bpenrod is right... . and oil analysis is the only correct way to see what's going one...

I would reason that the filter is overwelmed if the oil is jet black. If your saying that you can have jet black oil after 1000 miles and have no effect on wear characteristics, I am surprized. . I hope your right. I do realize an analyses is the final say. . Marty
