Oil change preference 2014 2500

I have a 2014 2500 diesel just turned 15,000 miles and the computer said it had 1% oil life left and needed fuel filter change. The dealer said I was way over due for oil change and they only recommend conventional oil not synthetic. My question is why the truck said the factory oil was good for 15,000, do you prefer synthtic, and is it normal to change the fuel filters after that mileage as well?

Yes in 15k on fuel filters. Trucks come OEM with synthetic oil. Cold climates stay with it. Warmer climates, your choice. Chris

Don't know how long you have owned your truck, but the oil change interval in my manual is 15000 miles or 6 months. As snoking said it has synthetic oil from the factory so if you like your synthetic oil you can keep your synthetic oil.

I have spent my entire life in the chemical R&D field. Just want to share a view from across the pond - because the rest of the world is right - here in US we are obsessed with oil changes. It is an industry led myth. Synthetic oil absolutely does not need changing every six months. Nowhere else in the world is still adhering to this outdated notion of 'must change oil every 6 months or 6000 miles'. Modern synthetic oil is good for far far longer and in practically every other country in the world is now only changed only on a needs must basis. ( When the diagnostics identify its time to change) Modern synthetic oil does not degrade over time and the need to change it will vary depending of your usage.
My last BMW for example went 16000 miles between oil changes. The oil ( Mobil 1 ) was changed at this point because the vehicle was called in by the service dep't as the diagnostics had finally said ' time to change'. This was a leased vehicle under full factory warranty etc. This whole notion of changing oil as frequently as we do here is an industry ( oil change) led for profit myth that modern oil needs changing every 6 months. Old habits die hard I guess and there is a whole industry out there feeding off of the fear of what might happen and it works. If you change your oil either when the oil life diagnostics say change or say just once a year , your engine will last just as long as anyone else's - FACT.

Recently purchased a used 2014 with CTD and 75,000'ish miles. Obviously I have no idea what type of oil the previous owner used but I'd prefer to run synthetic. The OP was for a recommendation at 15,000 miles but what about an engine with 60K more? With a few more payments left on this truck I'd like it to last a while so should I chance it and go to full synthetic? Also, how many trust a dealership saying they changed the oil before it was re-sold? LOL!

When I read my owners manual even from running it it says 10,000 miles ?
AND the main advantage of synthetic oil as opposed to organic is synthetic oil 'Sticks' to parts as opposed to everything draining into sump after a while as organic oil does.
Any dealer recommending organic oil is wrong!

In another post , I shared my conversation with Cummings who catagorically recommended and use synthetic oil and have done FOR OVER 15 years!

Just sharing...this situation and debate is unique to the US. No one changes oil like it's changed here. Anything under 10k miles between oil changes is simply throwing perfect oil away.
however...I get that peace of mind is also important...
