Oil Change Required

Just a note about my first oil change on the 08 6. 7 3500. My "Oil Change Required" "Contact Dealer" light in the EVIC came on at 2380 miles. In those first 2380 miles I have a mixture of highway trips, highway towing trips and city driving. Just seems like that is a little early for a oil change light to come on for a vehicle that is supposed to require oil changes every 7,500 miles or 6 months. I understand that driving style helps determine when this light comes on but to miss by 5120 miles doesn't seem right. Dealer said everything was okay, no recalls and no error lights were found. Comments?

I have the same sort of issue but have decided to take a few oil samples and monitor the quality for the first 15K. At 8500 it has had 2 oil and filter changes, the last one was with 3800 miles on the oil and a sample taken. It came back clean with only break-in metals in low amounts. A recommendation was to run this current oil for 5K and resample for a pattern. The Dodge dealer I use charges only $45. 00 for lube, oil and filter for the truck and they are pretty good about it. It is still cheaper than servicing the V-10 every 3K.

I gave my truck its first oil change at 1660 miles. Just the other day the change oil message came up. with only 3200 miles on the truck. thats only 1540 miles on the oil! Im not sure what to do, ask the dealer but they will probably just give me the universal answer " come in and schecule an oil change!" Or just reset the message.

The only way to confirm the accuracy of the oil change reminder is to sample the oil. I use Herguth labs in Vallejo CA and they charge $29. 00 for a sample. If you sample once, at least you have a baseline to use on fuel dilution for your duty cycle. It is much cheaper than an oil and filter change, and it gives you the information to make an informed decision on when to change. Most importantly, do not ignore the light, as it is there for a reason. If it proves to be accurate, follow it, otherwise use the sample to make the decision. Also ask your dealer to flash to the most recent software version. I believe it is still AM for 08 trucks at the current time.
