Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Oil Change Warning....Must Read !!!!

Well rolled 40k the other day so its time for a oil change (EVERY 5k For Me)



Just to make a note Im useing FLEETGUARD filters Mobil Super Oil



I pulled the truck in the garage about 1/2 way its snowing BIG TIME HERE



I droped the drain plug removed the oil fill for faster draining (VENT)



that took all of about 3 mins :-laf



Then I Placed a kroger bag over the Oil Filter and removed it never droped a lick



I did my normal oiling of the new filter gasket and filled the filter 1/2 way ... ...



now the part I hate tring to get the filter on it can be a major pain After fumbling around for about 5 mins Im getting mad I know Ive had to Knock some crap in the filter by now !!!!



I resorted to the under truck tactic



When I was fumbling around I seen something drop ... paid no mind just figgered it was crudded up oil or something ... .



I finnaly got the filter started Oo. Then I tighened it replaced the drain plug then filled up the motor with oil then started the truck and pulled it out side LEFT IT RUNNING.....



As I grab my broom to sweap alittle I see something... ... something Round... . I I bend over and pick it up its THE OIL FILTER GASKET ... OHHH NOOOOO I did the whole run this way run that way thing then I gathered my self some how :{



( CANT YOU FEAL THE DRAMA ??? )



I then went to the curb ... I Mean to my OSHA APROVED OIL DISPOAL CONTAINER.....



And got my OLD oil filter and it had the filter gasket missing... WHEW



I went to my truck poped the hood and there were no leaks around the filter ...



I dodged one heck of a bullet here it could have been real ugly under the hood



LESSON LEARNED ... ...



ALWAYS CHECK AND MAKE SURE OIL FILTER GASKET IS ON THE OLD FILTER .



THATS WHY i HAD A HARD TIME GETTING IT STARTED FROM ABOVE !!!



Just Thought Someone could learn from my blunders

If you remove the hose from the air filter to the turbo, the oil filter is much easier! SNOKING

Did the same thing--- your not alone, changing the oil on the old 91 acura i drive as a beater a few years back,after doing the oil change,started to clean up and in about 30 seconds of running it in the garage---bid puddle underneath---i learn from my mistakes. PS i really would like to meet the guy who decided to put the oil filter on the back of the engine againt the firewall :-{} ,i can just get my one hand up there to remove it.

I did remove my BHAF AND HOSE the Notch in the heat shield is a perfect place to put your arm when removing the filter :>



You would think Fleet gaurdwould be a high enough quallity you would'nt have to worry about it



I just got me some stratapores hopefully they used the filter gasket glue on them

I mean in the drive way



I started putting the new oil in and forgot to put the drain plug back in ..... (I USED THE DIP STICK) and checked it a few times and nothing ... man how many quarts can this thing take ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... IT wasnt my truck it was the first time I changed the oil in the wifes car. . as I steped back to get my other case of oil ... I seen a river of oil trailing across the drive way

Did the same thing on my 1985 Jeep CJ7. Noticed it immediately so it was not a total mess. Since then it is the first thing I check and double check for.

Thanks a lot DM, now you've done it! The eco-safety-zealots are going to team up with the litigation-paraniod legal practitioners and demand a warning label on all oil filters reminding the hapless consumer to properly affix the oil filter to prevent environmental disasters. Maybe they'll go one better and outlaw do-it-yourself oil changes all together and mandate that we all get servassed by the trained professionals at the Quicky Lube Mart.

Speaking of the Quicky Lube Mart. The last time I took a vehicle to get oil service I needed a cheater bar to get my drain plug out and the filter was another story! I do not believe they took the time to lube the gasket. I won't let them touch my vehicles any more. Thanx for Wal-mart recycling bin!

One time at work some guys where changing oil on a big truck with a Detriot 60 series. They drained the oil and removed the filters, then refilled the oil and forgot to install new filters. When they started it up several gallons of oil sparyed into the pit in a few seconds. :-laf :-laf :-laf

Yes i know,just about done with all the bombs,i am starting to be proud of that sig , but there is soooo much more i could do--time and $$$ are the only problem. . PS what can i do next?twins/headwork i guess.

The local Speedco here in Harrisburg, PA did something along the same lines with me Pete. I was pi**ed. They did all their stuff and they did put the new oil filter on but the numbnut crossthreaded it and he thought it was on tight, they had me come out to start it up and like I always do I watch the oil pressure gauge, well it wasn't moving and at the same time I was getting ready to shut it off I heard someone start yelling. Granted it didn't cause any problems but still ticked me off. Good thing was that two weeks later I took it into the shop because of it running rough, set an appointment up to have the overhead done and a new jake kit put in, while they wer doing the jake kit they noticed the headgasket was blown and I guess part of the procedure for the headgasket is to remove the cylinder packs for inspection and thats when they called me again to say that 5 of the 6 were shot from cavitation because the previous owner switched from extended life coolant to the normal green stuff and never kept up on the additives, anyway I had them put all six new cylinder packs in which includes; pistons, rings, liners, rods and bearings. The headgasket and all the labor was covered under warranty and I payed the bill for the cylinder packs and the labor for the overhead and the jake kit, $3,500 for an entire inframe minus main bearings on a 550 C15 Cat... . I can't complain one bit.

Yes I meant what DM is saying, you do have alot of bombs, but it is stretching the screen and I am using a really big screen resolution. Should try some spaces after each comma, that would fix everything right up.
