Anyone using the Shell Rotella 5-40 synthetic..... Results, likes, dislikes. Also, mechanic put in 12 quarts with the filter change; thoughts on this. Comments please. :--)

Why did he put 12 quarts in?

You will hear differing opinions on this... I personally feel more comfortable not overfilling the crankcase, therefore I go with the recommended 11 qts. ;)

Oil Changes

Fill the new oil filter will oil prior to installing, then add 9 1/2 or 10 gts depending on your filter size. This process will bring your oil pressure up quicker than waiting for a dry filter to fill via the oil pump. Your engine bearings / components and over-all engine life will last a lot longer. My 2 cents. :D

I would find a new mechanic. Any mechanic who fill it to 12 qts does not deserve the business. JMOO. 11qts is what the service manual calls for.

Shell Rotella 5w40 usage

:) I have not used the new Shell synthetic yet but expect to my next oil change. I am going to install a Gulf Coast bypass filter that will add another 6 qt's to the system, total will be 15 qt's. I plan on changing the paper towel and 6 qt's at 10k interavals with no oil drains planned. I also plan on changing the Mobil 1 M1-403 full flow at 20k interavals. Oil analysis will tell the tale. Much research was done with Shell and the Gulf Coast people as well as Mobil 1. By the way, Shell and all other major synthetic oil mfg. engineers don't care about a 4 ball wear test that one mfg. uses because it does not apply to industry standards. If you get to that extreme you would be using a gas turbine or jet engine, Not a cummins turbo diesel. I am going with the shell but Mobil1 Delvac is just as good. Seems like nobody else is concerned about anything but the 12 qt issue. My 2cents. Email -- email address removed --

jpolston,

I also don't like overfilling the crankcase. I use 11 quarts and the dipstick reads full.

I also don't like using 5W-anything. Cummins recommends 15W-40 for a reason. My understanding is that anything less than 15 weight does not remain on the cylinder walls, etc. , while the engine is shut down as well as the heavier oils. Thus, when the engine is started, it has less start-up lubrication.

I hope this helps.
