DC mandates 7500 miles for oil and filter change. CTD advertises on their web site 15000 miles for oil and filter change. What's your opinion on changing oil every 3000 miles with filter every other change. The engine gets 10 fresh quarts of oil with one dirty in filter to mix with. Truck is used for daily transporation to and from work 24 miles round trip 20 on interstate at 60 mph.

Change mine every 6k. Oil comes out as clean as it went in. Do a search on oil analysis. Lots of reading material.

BTW welcome to the TDR.

I just change oil and filter at 5K on my vehicles. 3K is for Quick Lube to sell more un-needed oil IMHO. SNOKING

I have gone to oil and filter changes every 4000 miles (Rotella T 15w40, love the smell). I drive 36 miles round trip with 25 of that at 55 mph or above :D I think you are fine changing oil and filter every 7500 miles based on your driving. I'm just anal, sounds like you are too :) . I do think it is just as important to change the filter as it is to change the oil. If I were you I would go to 4-5000 mile oil and filter changes using (dino). If you are using synthetic I would change oil and filter every 7500 based on your driving. This is IMHO. Hope this gives you some additional data points for your decision.

I agree with changing the filter at each change. That's where all the bad stuff is. Not to start an Amsoil war here, but Amsoil recommends changing the filter and adding 1 qt. of oil half way to the next oil change. I am not making any comments on extended oil change intervals here.

I have always changed mine (with filter) between 3000 and 3500 miles. thats every six weeks for me. Overkill? maybe but doing it yourself saves money and I when I sell a vehicle with the log book full of every receipt along with the log entry, people just don't argue about price very much.

oil change

I change my oil and filter every 5k. The oil seems clean when I drain it out. I use dino still (rotella T ). This is my first diesel but i'm an old puke and I have been changing oil in my cars for many years. I always thought that it was just as important to change the filter evry time you change the oil whatever interval you go with. Just mho and my . 02:D

JCockrell & Cobra,

You guys are saying that you oil comes out looking as clean as was when it went in? How can that be? Are you both using bypass filters or are you putting in black engine oil to begin with?? I know that about after about 1000mi on my Delvac 1 synthetic oil, my oil is pitch black... . I know other CTD owners report the same thing as me with the oil turning black QUICKLY. Please tell us how you keep your oil so clean!:D :D

I agree, mine also turns black in about 1000 miles. Thought that was normal???

Oh no... . Not another oil war!!!... . Change mine every 3-5000K with new filter, depending on amount of towing, and it always comes out black as coal... . ;) ;) ;) Use Chevron Delo 400...

5k miles here like clockwork. oil is black as coal after about 1k miles. change the filter every time with either a stratopore or mobil one filter. always use rotella T as well.

one company i work for has a fleet of PSD and they use this routine and get 250k miles with out engine lube problems.

just my $. 02

I feel that 5000 mile oil changes are ok if you're not doing a lot of short trip running, especially in cold weather. It also makes it easy to keep up with when the next change is due ... assuming that you started from a 5 increment number.

I get a free oil and filter every 6000 ( hey it was the least the dealer could do after what you have to pay for these trucks) and I change just the oil every 3000 in between. Could be overkill but oil is cheap compaired to motors. If I were footing the whole bill, oil and filter every 5000.

I am sorry if I misstated. My oil is black when I change it also. I did say it was clean but I didn't mean clean in the sense that it looked like it did when I put it in. I guess I shouldn't say any more because I already look like a dumb a$$ but, what I meant to say was that the oil seems to still have the same propeties as it did new. Hard to explain but, I have seen oil that looked really bad coming out of some vehicles.

When I drain mine it has a quality about it that I know other guys would use it in their cars. :p

5000mi

Change my ROTELLA-T every 5k mi with a new Fleetguard filter everytime. Only takes mine about 2000 mi to soot the oil.

Clean vs. visual interpolation

Ok, sorry guys, my definition of "clean" has no color bias :D What I mean by clean is: No floaties, metallic properties, shiny stuff, coolant... ... . I used to work in a "service" station, you remember those. Check your oil and tires sir? I like Cobra have seen some nasty oil coming out of the pan. Now as far as color, if its purple (dino, not barney) going in it'll be black in 6k.
