Is it normal for the oil to be black with 6000k / 3750mi from the last service? I've had one service done at 6300km so far, not sure what oil/filter the stealer put in there. I definitely fall under the 'A' schedule parameters but if the oil is black at 6000km I'm scared to see it at 12000km.

Black oil does not mean bad!

Don't get worried about black oil. Those of use that run extended drains know how black oil can really get. Even then (25K on the same oil with NO bypass) the soot levels are not even 25% of what a lab would flag as a concern.

Trucks that are run on the highway at highway speeds for long periods (clean burning hot engine) will go along time before the oil gets black. Trucks that do lots of stop and go, short trips OR have turned up engines and like to see black smoke out the tail pipe will get black oil much faster.

On my old truck, the oil would be dark by 1000 miles - I now have that on the oil in my new truck, and it's still clean as when I drove it off the lot - anyone know what brand/weight oil is used as factory fill?

OK thanks for the replies. I have to come clean and tell why I was concerned. When I removed the silencer ring a while back I ended up scratching the turbo housing and ring a bit. Like a moron I didn't think about cleaning out any metal bits, so when I checked the oil last night and saw it was blacker than expected I started thinking maybe a piece of metal had scored the cylinder wall and I was getting blow-by. Feel free to flame me for potentially screwing up my brand new Cummins motor by ingesting metal bits.
