BTW, my son in law is one of the top mercedes techs in the US and he agrees with me. So do several other folks that I know who have been in the car and truck fields for their entire lives.

And, btw, I dont know how many brand new cars youve owned in your lifetime. But if theyve all burned oil when they were brand new, you have been extremely UN lucky.

And, btw, my 02 ram with 120k miles still doesnt use any oil.

There you go, keep asking and you will get the answer you need from someone.

By the way, my car count is right up there. Over 40 for sure. Some new, some used. Either way I never batted an eye over a quart of consumption per 2000 miles AS LONG AS IT REMAINS CONSISTENT.

A quart in 1000 miles is about my personal lower limit for oil use.

Thanks,
That was what I was looking for. I may change brands on my next oil change. Also, my car count shown above is for brand new cars only. I dont have a clue how many Ive had in my live time. Im only concerned when a brand new car uses oil.
But its been a long long time since Ive had even a used car that used oil like that. And the cars that did were from the 70's and older.

I agree with you on the 0w20. But once again, most of these cars using the same oil are not using oil at all in between changes.

If there are no electronic whoopty do's in that four banger that need the low viscosity I would give it a dose of 5w-20 or 5w-30 to see if that made a difference for one oil change.

I am operating under the assumption that there is no smoke, odor, leakage, etc. involving that engine in this discussion.

It says to go by the oil quality display (I forget what it is called). But most go about 5k miles. I get mine changed at 3k to 3500 miles.

If the engine utilizes the MultiAir valvetrain system, I'd be extremely hesitant about mucking around with non-recommended oil viscosities. But that's just me.....

I fully agree with you on viscosity. My question had to do with brand, not viscosity.

And I still havnt heard anyone with an experienced opinion on changing oil brands.

Regarding the Hemi in the '14, they are very specific about EO weight and an MS spec that Mobil1 don't meet. There are only 2 brands to use out there. And if the wrong weight is used you'll get a MIL. The MDS and VVT will malfunction.
Choose your oil wisely.

I brought it up because changing viscosity was a topic of conversation in posts #20 through #24.

Rusty

Right, but only if the engine lacked any gizmos. Now it would appear to be full of them. So no viscosity change.

I can't see how it could not use oil with that in the crankcase.

I brought up the subject of the Hemi because that has a valid reason for special oil. He is dealing with a Dart. But that may have VVT as well.

Mike, I ask the same- which plant he has- but have you studied the valve train of the Fiat multi-air engine?

I had to leave work early today so I had time to stop at my local Dodge dealer. Had an off the record chat with the techs that I know regarding oil consumption.

The 2.0L Tigershark will use some oil. Quart per 2000 miles not unreasonable at all.

There is rumored to be something on the net regarding this, going to try and find it this evening.

Read that forum post.
The Hemi has a similar windage issue and the big mod is to install a catch can. Mine is staying stock. Don't use oil. I have shy of 4500 on 5/20 pennz platinum- approx 50%. I'll dump it before it reaches 30%.
My working theory is that designers don't want excess crankcase space due to packaging and or excess dirty vapors, so they really close up the top end and make oil management tough.
