I need some advice on trouble shooting my other car. Oil use has all of a sudden gone from zero to a quart every 2500 miles. Here are the details: It's a 1993 Toyota Tercel, standard 4 speed with 105,000 miles which I;ve owned since new. It shows no leaks around the engine and does not smoke while driving. No oil on the driveway where I park. It runs just fine and gets about 38mpg. I've been using Mobile One 10w30 since about 20,000 miles and change the oil and filter every 6,000 miles. All the little hoses on the engine are connected and the engine is totally stock. Car has never been run hot or abused in any other way.

I'm at a loss as to what to do or check next. Thanks for any advice.

Park the car in the garage. Close the garage door. Crank the engine and leave it running for 15 minutes. Caution: exit the garage while you leave the engine running.

When you go back to the garage, you will have a garage full of blue smoke if the engine is burning oil.

The catalytic converter on most cars will disguise the oil burning while driving down the road.

A qt in 2500 is very normal. I'd check the PCV. You might try some different oils. Some cars just burn certain oils for some reason. 10w-30 Mobil 1 is on the thin side of a 30wt. Something thicker might help maybe even a 40wt. A lot info about oil here

CGriffith: I checked the PVC valve and it's OK. 2500 miles may be normal for many cars, but I'm concerned because in the first 100,000 miles I never had to add a drop of oil and now it's burning a quart every 2500. I figure the oil is being burned because I don't see it anywhere else. The Mobile 1 oil has been used for 80,000 iles without adding a drop between 6,000 mile oil changes. If I don't find a problem I can easily fix I may switch to the synthetic Rolella that I use in the truck.
