ok, here's the deal- my truck was 2 quarts low today, my fuel mileage has been getting worse for the past month or so- not the usual winter fuel problem, and when I sit at idle in neutral for a few minutes I have an awful odor inside the cab. I can smell it in the front of the truck as well. Do you have any idea what the problem could be? Possible bad injector(s)? Any help will be great. I will be going to the dealer in a few days, and want some ammunition for when I get there. By the way the truck is a 2003 Quad 4x4 S. O. auto with 80000 miles.

Done an oil change lately? I've heard some on here say that Rotella stinks for awhile after a change. I switched to Valvoline PBE (synthetic 5W-40) about a month ago. I could smell the new oil outside and inside the cab for the first few hundred miles. The cummins crankcase is vented to atmosphere I think. Oh, if you did a change recently, did you fill the filter? I think it may hold about 2 qts. of oil. May explain your loss of a few qts. As for the mileage, it could go down a little if switched from synthetic to regular petrol. Or if the temp has taken a dive in the last month in your region. Just my thoughts.

I don't think it has anything to do with your injectors. If they were sticking open you would have increased your oil level not decreased (i. e. diesel fuel in your oil)

It's most likely the breather. As far as synths go... Mobile smells bad, Amsoil stinks, and Rotella will never see the innards of mine engine. God does that stuff smell bad. Dad has used it and it's just awful.

There's a thread here somewhere about how to rework the cab vents to prevent the smell working its way in.

DC has a fix of their own. Your dealer should have a small bottle of lemony smelly stuff to dump in with the oil. Some fix.

Edit: I've had a strange smell outside my truck lately. Couldn't figure out if it was 75-90, ATF, Engine oil, or transmission stuff. Couldn't find any leaks or anything, but it was definently a smelly something. Had the truck in the shop yesterday to put my X-intake back on (had it off for a trial) and lo and behold I must have not put the rad. overflow hose on all the way. That red coolant crap stinketh.
