Anybody know what is considered normal oil consumption?

Under normal conditions like 80% highway and 20%city with light towing under 5000#.

If I tow at all it's more than 5000lbs, but otherwise my driving is pretty much like your example. My truck uses about 1 qt over 6000 miles between changes. I run Delo 15w/40.

Within the last week I was reading some literature from cummins that said a quart every 2500 miles was normal. I personally have never seen anywhere near that amount.

I change my oil every 5K, I haven't used any measurable amount (based on the dipstick). Granted I've only got 36k on the engine... .

Something to consider. Petroleum based oils have between 4 - 10 % solvent base. With heat and time this will evaporate. With 3 gal of oil 5% can add up. If you keep topping it off, does the consumption slow down?
