By using more oil between changes makes the 5-40 even more expensive to operate with zero gains from what I see.

Not all duty cycles will see a discernible amount of oil burn. The harder you work the engine the more potential exists thou.

There was already one member in this thread reporting oil consumption on 5w-40, but not all will.

You'll never see a difference with the OE oil pressure/temp gauges, since they are fake. Install a pair of real gauges and you’ll see a discernible difference... but it likely doesn’t matter for average use and motor life.

Exactly, 2-3 psi does not mean much of anything.

The biggest thing people are likely to see is an increase in oil consumption with 5w-40.

I have been using T6 from the the first oil change (with the exception of one oil change I used 15w40 T4), I have about 90k on the truck, I have never needed to add any oil between oil changes. So if there is a difference in oil consumption, it too is indecipherable.

What mileage are you changing? How low ore you at that time?

I normally change at 15k. I add one quart. I am a bit low at change.

I also change at 15k or annual (with no topping off between changes) which has lately been more like 12-14kmioes @ 12 months the last two years.

I also don't have to add any oil and I use that pesky bottom of the barrel Mobil Delvac @ $7 per gallon.... probably the stuff that Amsoil dumps down the drain.... :p:cool:

I typically change when my oil change warning comes on twice. I'll go to the first then rest and change after the second. Could be 6k miles could be 15k.

I just found a decent maintenance tracker app so I have started using that and will just go off mileage at this point

I wonder how much it matters. I tow at least 1/3 of those miles West Coast at 34-35k combined.

And I don't tow that heavy but at least 75% are towing or hauling something, the majority at low speed. IE hay wagons, gravity wagons, loads of firewood, 5th wheel, 14k tilt deck, dump trailer, etc. It rarely gets used if I don't need a truck. My bed didn't end up looking like this going to coffee....:D

I think when you are pulling miles of 6% and descending them as the West Coast has lots of them some oil consumption is normal. I am more than ok with 1 quart in 15k.

My mileage varies as I change at 6 month intervals. I think my mileage is typically 9-12k by the time 6 months arrives. At oil change time I'm not even a quart low....maybe 1/2?

I’m not telling or recommending anyone use this oil. I posted this for the people who do use it and for their information only. Didn’t try to start another oil thread about who thinks what they use is better. Jeez

Some just can't help themselves....it's inevitable.

Don't think anyone thought you were pushing it other than mentioning price. You are a short timer here. You need to understand after the initial discussion the threads tend to wander. IMHO that is a good thing as it brings up other useful info.

I agree with you on that part. There are alot of threads on here that started one way and by reading through them I have learned a number of things I didn't think that I would have lol.

My book for the '18 2500 says that 15/40 is recommended for 0°F and above. For colder temps, it specifically recommends "5/40 synthetic".

My 15 book says the same. So how many live in 0 and above and use the 5-40. Doesn’t make much sense to me to run 5-40 0 and above but for some reason it appears many do.

I think most people would plug in heater in teens to single digit and below. With spec I showed having only three degrees difference in pour point personally think 15-40 is a more recommended choice.
