oil drain for trans

Guys I just got the Geno's oil pan drain plug finger touch style. The brass thread that screws into the pan is tall and it would appear that not all the oil in the pan would be evacuated on a drain service.

Should I attempt to drill out the brass threaded area to provide a cross section drain passage way?

I would appreciate observations and opinions.

William

I think it depends on which model you have. The newer Fumoto valves are supposed to have the short threads. Did you compare the thread lenght with the stock plug?

Charles

Charles... part # on the bag is FG7BN thread height is only slightly (less than a 1/16") shorter than the factory plug. But, removal of the factory plug during normal service allows for the most "compleat" drain. I had purchased the "HD" plug to begin with to gain the advantage of the "heavy" shoulders and 9/16" hex head removal advantage over the "lame" factory unit.

This recent change is because my truck is tall and draining with the "removable-bung" type plug causes a "splashy" mess into the standard shop drain pan. Hence I chose the "nippled" Fumoto style so I can place a length of tubing on the nipple and provide a "clean" drain proceedure.

Now I see I have introduced a new problem... . I still desire full evacuation drain... and this Fumoto thing requires a modification or a return to Geno's due to a poor performance design... ...

Gosh! what should I do:(

William

Quite a while back there was a member on here that drilled four small drain holes near the base or flange of the drain valve. He installed the gasket first to get an idea of where the holes should be placed. He posted pics that you may find with a search. The holes allowed complete draining of the pan during oil changes.

I helps to file a small flat where you want to drill. This is what I did (drill 4 small holes) and I verified that all the oil will drain out.

85CJ... Thank you for the reminder to use "SEARCH" I found the information I needed:)

radixr... I'm doing exactly what you have suggested and I've just compleated the modification. Thank You!

This TDR site is the BEST!:D

I can now drain directly into my recycle bottles without error... this is very clean and convenient.

Very cool fellas... Thank You

If you stick your finger up in the oil pan you will feel four grooves next to the drain hole that help drain all the oil. Unless the holes you drill in your drain valve line up with these when it's screwed in you still won't drain all the oil. Stock plug works fine for me but what do I know, I've only changed my CTD oil about 65 times, never used a torque wrench.

I used a complex approach...

Guys:

I had the finger touch on my 00 and installed one on my new 02 a few weeks ago. I have a pick with a 90' turn on the end. I stuck it in the oil pan and turned it where it caught the top of the threads. I used it to measure the distance to the top of the threads. I then cross-drilled the threads of the finger touch using 1/8" bit, lightly filed it and presto.

I have a magnet from an old magnetic mount antenna that I stick on the bottom of the oil pan to catch any ferous metal. I just pull the magnet off, open the valve and let 'er rip.

whoops!

illflem's post reminded me that I didn't just file a flat where I drilled the holes. I filed a flat all the way around the base of the plug so that it wouldn't matter where the holes were drilled. Sorry that I forgot about that, William. :{

Sky... I belive the "N" in the part number on this unit designates the "nipple" style that allows for a short length of tubing to be applied for convenience. In my case... a tall truck and splash avoidance is my reason for chosing this model.

Bill... I caught your input and it changed my procedure...

radixr... no problem, with you and Bill sharing information about this Oil Pan outlet, it prompted me to look at this in a much more discerning fashion. I was able to locate the four slots and mark them on the pan. I then installed the Fumoto and marked the brass body in the same locations. I then drilled my four pilot holes and did some shaping work with a Dremel Tool. The results are outstanding due to the experience and carefull observations of the TDR members:cool:
