Guy's, Need help asap! went to change my oil today and I rounded(almost broke off):--) the 9/16 hex head. I bought a torque wrench last oil change so I know that it went back on at 40ft/lbs, any help would be appreciated Don
 
oil drain plug solution

Hello Don , I had the same problem with mine as well. I brought a direct replacement plug from Geno's Garage. It's a 1-1/8 socket drive and has a magnet attached to it as well. Don't know what i paid for it, check genosgarage.com DW :D
 
Maybe I am not careful enough, but I never saw the need to torque wrench an oil plug. One thing I do, because of the vibration of the engine, is to degrease the mating surfaces and just go snug with it, about like the beast comes from the factory.
 
Thank's for the help,my neighbor brought over the smallest pipe wrench I've ever seen about 5-1/2 inches long and got it on the washer part of the drain plug and put a short pipe on it and got it to break loose and will change oil next week when new plug arrive's Don

Torque to spec. In your owners Manual. Put anti-seise compound on male thred just enough to do the job . Or do like Me and get the drain Plug replacement ,valve ,cap and hose assy . Ron Bissett In Metro Louisville KY

Get the oil plug that has the lever to open it.



I have had mine on almost since new and it works great every time, not once has it tried to open by itself, it has a spring and a detent to prevent that, The thing is, no unscrewing and getting oil on your hand when you drain it.
 
Not to start a torque war, but...

All:



I torque important engine components and the oil plug is one that i don't. Snug (probably 14 - 18 ft lbs) it good using 3/8" ratchet. There was lots of posts in the past on this and it was the guys who torqued the plugs who had the problems.



Places like K-Mart, Wal Mart were notorious about overtightening oil plugs too.



I haven't had to remove/install oil plug in a long time as I installed got the oil plugs with the levers from Geno's. they are snugged on.

Same here. The advantage of this over a quick drain is all the oil in the pan will come out rather than leaving a 1/2 inch of dirty oil in the pan (area above the lip of quick drain).



Either way is better than stock though.

You mean 1/2" above the 1/4" of dirty oil that gets left behind due to our poorly designed oil pans?;)

I have one of those on my Nissan. It's AWESOME!! It's made by Fumoto Engineering, and it's high quality and DOES NOT LEAK!



I'll put one on my truck eventually. They make two versions: one with a nipple for connecting a hose, and one without. I have the one without for more ground clearance.



The ground clearance issue is the reason I've stayed stock so far-- I'd hate to have something grab the oil plug and rip it out of the pan.



The stock plug on my '02 is flush with the pan, and I just don't have a compelling reason to change it for something else. It works, so I don't feel a need to mess with it.

Be careful if replacing the stock drain plug with the heavy duty one. You should check it several times for tightness over a 1000 miles after instaling it to make sure it isnt coming loose. Mine came almost all the way out after 1500 miles and I lost oil pressure and trashed the turbo but the engine seems to have survived nicely. I check mine at 500 miles after each oil change now.
