I noticed in the Geno's Garage catalog that they have two oil drain plugs, the EZ Change Drain Plug and the Finger Touch DP.

I was wondering which one to get, or does it even matter? Anyone have any actual experience with either? Finally, I know this is going to sound really stupid, but here goes... do you ever worry that your oil might be drained by some prankster?

I had the Finger Touch on my '00 3500 and it made oil changes a bit faster and I didn't have to wear glove to keep the hot oil off my hand, but it didn't let the pan drain completely.

I'm not going to re-install it on my '03 3500 because the pan is lower to the ground and I don't want to worry about knocking it off if I accidentally run over a piece of highway debris.

The so called 'finger touch' is nothing other than a Fumoto Drain Valve. I have had them on 3 vehicles. I'm guessing they renamed it because it's more expensive at Geno's than other places. Look around guys if you want this item. Be sure to get the "N" model, because it has a nipple to attach a length of hose to. This really facilitates directing the oil flow right into your container of choice, with no surprises or spills.

I'm also interested in hearing about that EZ drain/change kind, where you thread in the hose. I'd guess that sand and debris would get into the threads etc, possibly making it hard to thread in?

Fram makes a pretty nice one, it is called the Sure Drain, the model for the '03 CTD is SD-5. It's a pretty nice piece, I had one on my GMC for a few years never a problem. They have them at Wal-Mart or Autozone for about $13.

ez drain

i had the ez drain on my 96 for 140k and never no problem it has a check valve in it that has to be pushed up by the screw on piece to drain and a cover to keep crude out that screws on when not changing the oil just bought one for my new 03 i cant imagine not having one i was always worried about rounding off the stock plug on my 96 and this complete eliminates that. just my opinion though

I've got the EZ touch on my '03 4x4. It tucks up pretty high so I'm not worried about hitting it. I keep the hose part in a zip-lock back in the tool box along with an extra filter and a gallon of oil. Pretty darn easy to install and use. Put on a glove (optional), unscrew the little cover, screw on the hose, drain. That's about it.

Even the mechanic at the dealer had no problem on my recent 15k service. I just left the bag with the hose on the drivers's side floor so he couldn't miss it...

There is a brass cap that goes onto the EZ and it would not be possible for it to get sand or dirt in there. It is a nice set-up, I had it on my 98. 5 and loved it. The '03 has a different size drain plug or I would still have it. I had the finger touch on my Fords years ago and never had a problem. I will probably leave the '03 stock, at least for now.

The 'finger touch' is just a Fumoto valve, I'm not sure why Geno's wants to rename it, other than the fact they charge more than everyone else does for it:rolleyes: I've had fumotos on my last two vehicles, and they work very well.

The ez sounds like a pretty good unit, however it seems like MORE of a pain than the fumoto, being that it needs extra parts and you have to screw something out, and into it. The fumoto you just pull the little lever and it starts draining. Most likely if they have one to fit the new 04, I'll get one of those.

How tight are you guys putting these in? I'm a little worried about overtightening on a soft aluminum oil pan...

I like the finger touch and it does stick down a little on a 2x4 but no problems with it yet on the 03 and even went "mudding" last weekend (another story). One main reason I like the flipper is it easy to stop and start for a sample and no mess. The y2k had it for over 75-80 k an no problems even after the roll. The truck is up and running in another area (after junker rebuilt it) with the valve and no leaks reported.
