Oil experts opinions wanted

What do you guys think about Rotella 5w40 full synthetic? I'm either going to stay with Rotella T 15w40 and change it every 5,000 miles or based on the cost/availability of synthetic in my area try the Rotella 5w40 full synthetic and run it 7,500 miles between changes. I can get the Rotella synthetic at the local Walmart super store for around $11-12 a gallon. My other choice locally is Delvac 1 5w40 full synthetic, but I have to by a case at a time and that is close to $84. 00 for 4 gallons . I will be using the Fleetguard Stratapore filter with whatever oil I end up using.

Absolutely, positively NOT an "oil expert"...



BUT, I'm seriously considering the Delvac synthetic myself, when I figure I have enough breakin miles on the '02... Will use the Stratapore filter, and my Frantz bypass - and will probably also go to 7000 mile or so changes, with a Frantz filter element change at the 3500 mile or so mark...



The Amsoil stuff interests me - but their PRICES do NOT!

No expert either, not even close. The only reason I use synthetics is because of the minus zero temperatures around here for months at a time. If I lived where it was above freezing year around I wouldn't even consider synthetics unless the price per quart was the same. You could change your oil every three thousand miles with regular oil and have better pertection than changeing every 6,000 miles with synthetic and come out the same on cost. That is just my opinion. Keep in mind that Rotella T 5-40 is not a true synthetic like a group IV oil.

I'm no expert either, but ronsram is correct. Rotella 5W-40 synthetic is what is known as a "group III" synthetic. It is produced from severely hydrocracked crude oil stocks. These oils are very good, with performance very close to group IV and group V oils. The Rotella does not have a very low pour point for a synthetic. Check the spec. sheet before you buy.

Where I live it might get down to -10 F one night out of the year. If you were going to run one of these oils 7,500 miles between changes with the Strapore filter and price "was" part of the equation which one would you choose?

I use Rotella 10-30 in the winter months.

Just wondering what the pour point was on it?

It normally gets down to -20F for a week or two up here in Anchorage, and I plan on sticking with plain old (non-synthetic)Delo 400 this winter. But then I regularly plug the truck in (oil pan heater + block heater). I would say if you can't plug your truck in regularly and money's an issue, then you should probably go with whatever's cheapest out of the synthetics. You really couldn't go wrong with any of them.
