Oil Filter changes

I noticed on a previous thread that a lot of you guys don't have to use wrenches to put the oil filter back ON. The only oil change I've done so far on the Cummins, with a Stratopore filter, I tightened up hand tight, then fired her up. She puked one and a half quarts down the driveway before I realized it and shut her down.



I had to put a filter wrench on it and really crank it up tight to seal it up. What's up with that??

i dunno. not to be ornery, but are you sure it wasn't/isn't cross threaded? i've changed mine 3 times now. so far now no wrench to tighten, just to get the old one off.

I don't think so, redneckdr. The filter spun up the treads pretty easy till the gasket touched the seat. If it is crossed, it's held up OK for 4000 miles without a leak.

Do you think that the Stratopores need the extra tightening?

i'm using stratapores, that i bought from Geno's. never have had to resort to a wrench to install. wonder if you had a filter that had a burr partway into the threads. when you change it next time be sure to check the threads on the mount. hopefully they aren't damaged. i'd suspect if not, you won't have a problem next time.

I have been able to spin on the filter 3/4 turn past engaging the gasket by hand only one way... gloves. Use those yellow dishwashing gloves with the textured surface. My hands are always to oily to grip the filter, but those gloves do the trick.

I noticed that you have to tighten it by hand, more so than with a regular automotive filter, i think the threads are finer pitch, meaning a little more tightening by hand?

Just be sure the old gasket stayed with the old filter, having two gaskets is looking for a disaster, a REAL mess, this has happened to me I am ashamed to admit, more than once before on Ford passenger cars!

I have changed the oil in my Ram 7 times and I only hand tighten the oil filter. I hate to ask, but did you lube the gasket before you put the filter on?

Might also check to see if the gasket from the old filter separated and stayed on the housing. I always look at my old ones before I put the new one on.

I go one half to three quarters of a turn past contact of the gasket by hand and have never had a leak. I also have never needed more than normal leather work gloves to get the filter off for a change either. I will not let a filter wrench near my truck, it just isn't necessary on mine.

Oil filter change

I use the stratapores also from Geno's. Hand tight no problems. However on a chevy gasser I had years ago the old gasket stayed on and about three blocks from the house, oil everywhere. Learned my lesson I now check everytime!!

Two wrenchs and three arms, and I got my first one off. Took turbo to air cleaner host off. It gets better! SNOKING

Had the same thing happen to me, I now tighten the filter now by hand as much as I can then put a strap wrench on and put a 3/4 turn more. buy the way I'm 6'2" and weigh 260. Jack
