So I was changing the oil in my truck today and I had a few other brands of oil filters laying around and I thought Id take a few pics and show you guys the differences between them. I for one have never used a FRAM in my truck. Fleetguards are all Ive ever used or on the rare occasion, a Napa Gold. But from now on, Nothing less than a Fleetguard. I'll let the pics speak for themselves.

On the left is a Napa Gold 7620. In the middle a Fleetguard LF3972 and on the left a Mobil 1 M1-403.

I don't get it,, what does thi show?? What are you looking at that proves one over the other?

Look at the second picture, the flow ability of the Fleetguard, is about double the other two, more and bigger openings. I was in Auto Zone the other day and pulled their filters (that they carry for the CTD) out of the box and they were all simular. They handle STP, Mobil 1, K&N, and Fram, it's like they were all made by Fram. The Baldwin, Donaldson and Fleetguard are very simular.

BINGO!!!

I have posted about that MANY times, but it doesn't seem to sink in. Especially that the Cummins B flows 20 gallons of oil per MINUTE.

Thanks for the pics JRD, just what I needed to make my point :)

When I goth my current truck I had a case of the Mobile filters left over from the '01. I don't think I've ever put anything else on this truck. Mine are gray, not black, but it's the same number. No probs of any kind yet. Oil tests just fine.

Wow Vaughn I had no idea the B flows that much!

Thanks for the info!

not to keep beating a dead horse but the fleetguard unit you have there is an upgrade over their standard unit..... there is an upgraded unit available through NAPA/WIX 7620XE this filter uses a glass media and does have much larger orfices... ... looks very close to fleetguard unit pictured... ... . just makin sure we're comparing apples to apples

Geno's lists the 3972 as the "standard" fluted filter.

I need to order filters ASAP and if WIX or Mobile have a comparable filter that's what I'll go with. If not, then Geno's will be getting a call pretty soon.

The 3972 is the lower grade fleetguard for the 3rd gen.

The LF16035 is the Stratapore upgrade unit from fleetguard for the 3rd gen.

Both have the high volume flow feature.

Guys keep telling yourself those fram made units are good!! :-laf

and here is another shot

I don't think this picture is going to tell you ANYTHING about the flow of a filter... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ..... there are many other things that will determiine the "flow" rate of a filter! As an example, the filtering "media"! If you want to compare , get the spec. sheets for each filter, then you'll have something to compare.

Which ones are "fram made"? I've cut a cross section of the WIX and Mobile and they have different filter media and casings, they are not the same. Not saying they're any better, they're just different.

oil filters

I have always used the mopar filter on my 04. 5. I recently switched to amsoil and used a donaldson filter. First, is this filter ok for a six thousand mile oil change interval? Also has anyone used other than fleetguard or mopar filters for a 100,000 miles plus without problems? tks steve

I ran purolators for over 200k without any trouble... I only run three filters on my CTDs: Mopar, Fleetguard, or Purolator...

I will run a wix on my gassers from time to time... but I won't run a Fram on my neighbor's car...

Yes, I have used other filters than the "fleetgaurd". I have used the "Amsoil" full-flow filters since 91', but when Amsoil came out with the "Donaldson" a couple of years ago, I switched to those. I have as many as 150,000 using these filters with NO PROBLEMS at all!

The only Mopar/Fleetguard oil filters I used are the two that came with each truck. Every filter other than those two for 260K combined has been either WIX or Mobile. I have nothing against fleetguard, the others are just more readily available. If someone shows me proof that I'm running an inferior filter I'll change in a minute.
