I ordered 2 Stratopore LF 16035 oil filters for my '03 from Geno's. Today, I get a voice mail from Geno's saying they are on backorder until the end of March. They can substitute LF 3894 if I don't want to wait. The voice said they were the same filter, just not fluted. I don't have a problem with the lack of fluting, BUT... . the LF 3894 is listed as used on '98. 5 to '02 engines. Would this create a problem? I am not in a hurry to get the filters, so waiting would not be a problem. If they are indeed the same filter (except for the fluting), are they compatible???

Thanks guys

the 3894 is the same filter without the flutes. ive never seen the need for the flutes and use this filter on my 99 and 05, just dont see the need to pay the xtra $$ for flutes i dont use. Yes genos wasn't lying to u u can use it. I'll say it again, its the same stratopore filter without the flutes u can use it...

Thanks guys! It'll try to give them a call today when I have a chance. If I remember correctly they are the same price.

I wonder why they are not listed for the newer engines?

I don't understand all the hoopla about the different stock numbers of filters for the Cummins engine in the Dodge application, when the Amsoil filter, currently (EaO-80, as well as Donaldson ELF-7349) is used in every Dodge/Cummins application from 89 to the current model year!

The oil filter used on the 24v engines ( LF3959 and LF3894 ) have a thicker shell and nut plate than the LF3349 and LF3552 used on the 12v engines. You could use LF3972 and LF16035 on all Dodges if you wanted to. Fleetguard chose not to supercede all of them up to one because of other applications that the 5. 9 is used in. The 24v engine used in Non Dodges use a different filter ( bigger threaded hole ). Shadrach

Wow... learn something new every day. Thanks for the info guys. I talked to Wendy at Geno's today and the 3894s are on the way.

Thanks again.

I don't know too much but our tractors with a 5. 9L and our newest tractor with the 6. 7L all use the same filter head and thus you can use same filter on all of them. Since the cost is minimal for the better filter why not use it. For the amsoil fellow I am not up on the donaldson oil filters. Fleetguard's marketing or lack of has worked on me. I believe the best filter I can get for my engines is fleetguard. The price is competetive too. Most other filters that I've looked at look like they have paper media not stratopore or microglass. I like to know the facts and be educated. LF3894 for me. We buy them by the case.

As far as I know the flutes are only there to give a cap wrench something to bite onto. If they serve any other purpose, please enlighten me also. I use one of those self adjusting 3 fingered oil filter wrenches from Craftsman. Fits any size filter and doesn't need flutes.

a cap wrench sure seems to be the easiest way to change it to me. That's why I like the flutes. I wish I had a wrench like Ryan's though.

The Donaldson/Amsoil are 100% at 20um, 98. 78% at 15um, and 59. 97% at 7um. The Fleetguard Stratapore are 98. 7% at 25um.

I also prefer the cam style wrench. This is the one I have. The more pressure you exert the tighter the clamping force gets.
