I've found that it will siphon out. Some times more than others and I haven't figured out the key reason and what each change had in common when it did siphon. Cause I would always like to repeat it to make life easier.

I have noticed this happen when NOT changing oil, but only the filter (I change my filter every 6mos and use oil analysis to determine when to change oil). I have noticed a low filter oil level more often when the dip-stick shows the engine is a qt low or so on oil. I'm not sure if this happens because the engine is low on oil OR if the anti-drain back valve in the filter is not working properly. Any thoughts about the anti-drain back valve not working????

What type of filter are you using?

Have seen oil siphon out of filters before on other engines too, depending how hot your oil is will determine if it siphons out, its nothing to really worry about it.

When I used the Microglass filters (3552 ?) they always siphon back about 1/2 a quart. No mess. Good deal!

The Stratapore (3984 ?) filters never seem to loose a drop. Big mess if you do not use the gallon ziplock bag trick.

While changing my oil last night, I was spinning my filter off expecting the usual gush of oil to run out. To my suprise not a drop came out. After getting the filter off I looked inside to find the filter only half full. This is my 5th or 6th oil change and every other one the filter was completely full. Could this be a problem will the oil pump or clogged passages ? Engine runs fine and oil pressure guage is normal.

Only twice on 25k mi has my filter been full, it is usually about an inch below the top of the filter. I think it siphons out.

Mine is always full, and overflows all over the AC lines when I remove it. Of course I change the oil on a hot engine, don't know if it drains back over night.

I am using Fleetguard filters. Glad to here that it is normal. Had me worried as someone posted about filters coming apart and clogging everything up.

just punch a hole in the bottom of the filter to let it drain.

I Have found that the cleanest, way is to use a one gal. zip lock baggie. break the filter loose, put the bag around the filter, spin it off, zip the bag and waalaa. Clean hands, clean engine compartment and nothing to clean up on the driveway. Plus it doesn't mess up the garbage can.

I FOUND THE TRICK!!!! Wait at least 1 hour before spinning off your filter. I hated when it would gush oil all over everything. Now... all I do is pull the drain on the pan, go inside and have lunch and a beer...come back about 1. 5 hours later and when I take the filter off, no more mess. Works for me! It takes this long to siphon out. My filter is usually a minimum of 3/4 full.

GARBAGE CAN?!?! #ad

Out here you'd get shot for throwing an oil filter full of oil in the garbage can! I take all my oil and filters to a recycling center (basically a Jiffy Lube).

I'm not saying we need to be granola tree-huggers, but let's at least promote some basic kind of environmentally concious behavior within the group! It might seem like a pain at first, but how often do you pass a gas-station, jiffy lube, pep-boys or autoparts store? Probably every day... it won't kill us to dipsose of this stuff properly... .

Don't mean to flame anyone in particular, but I'm thinking the TDR should also promote the environmentally sound reasons to own a diesel... . and if members are throwing oil and filters in the trash, we are going to face an even tougher battle against the government when they want to outlaw diesel fuel for private use!

well said, Scooby.
