Amsoil Oil filter half full or half empty

I am using Amsoil series 3000 synthetic 5w30 and the Amsoil SDF

oil filter. I changed the filter only at 5,000 miles and was surprised it didn't make a mess. It was only half full of oil. Is this normal? Do other filters also let oil siphon back out when the truck is not running? Is this related to my 24 valve engine? The pressure seems to come up soon enough when the engine is started. Thanks in advance.

I think it's normal if you let the truck sit for any time before removing the filter. I drain the oil then remove the filter and it's never full. = no mess :)

Mine's usually about 2/3 full (or 1/3 empty :D) depending on one's personal outlook. Will slip out of my fingers from time to time adding to the general mess that I make when changing the oil. I definitely feel like I've done something when I finish :)

A neat trick I learned from this site is to slip a 2 qt plastic bag under the filter and then loosen it what ever spills is caught in the bag. Works great. After the filter is unscrewed then remove the bag and filter and no mess.

See Ya

If the engine is hot when you shut it down it will siphon oil out of the filter in about a half hour, sometimes longer. I have never had oil spill out the filter during an oil change as long as i let it sit long enough.

Re: Amsoil Oil filter half full or half empty

I also find this condition. It also explains the dip stick readings you get. When I picked up my Ram the oil level on the stick was about 3/8 to 1/2 inch above full mark. I thought it was over filled. On my 1st oil chg. I serviced it with 11 qts . After start up and leak check/warm up I checked and the level was correct. The next AM it was over full. So I have learned the only accurate dip stick ck. is to wait about 10 min. after shut down.

Thanks for the replies. during all the previous oil changes I always drained the oil first and figured it was just siphoning out of the filter. I was expecting to make a mess when I went to do my first filter only change during the extended oil period I am trying with the Amsoil. I was surprised to find the oil filter not full of oil. I guess its no big deal. Thanks again.

Oil Pressure

I would appreciate some feedback regarding the lenght of time for oil pressure to come up to normal on 24 valve engine. My truck (2001 HO) takes from 4 to 5 seconds for oil pressure to come up. I hear the same story from other owners but no one has been able to tell me what is considered normal or why it is delayed. I am a new Cummins owner previous Power Stroke owner.

Oil press

You have oil press. I believe it takes a few seconds for the cummins ecu & Dodge electronics to communicate. Mine does the same thing.
