I see that the fleetguard oil filter for 3rd gen is useable for all years, so can I use the filter for 2nd gen 24v on my 05? Is the only difference the ability to use the socket on the end?

I'm sure that its been asked, but I couldn't find it :rolleyes: . Thanks, Nick.

On rv.net, a simple question like this will go on for 4 pages ending with all kinds of name calling and the moderator finallly killing the thread.

I know for fact that the 24Valve filter is rated for a higher pressure than the 12 Valve filter, due to higher oil pressure spikes during cold operation... . This give you a backwards compatability, but not forwards. The older filters will install on the newer engines, but they may not be able to hold the pressure under extreme conditions... ... I would be cautious in trying this. It is very likely it will be fine, but not gauranteed... . P.

Well that would suck- The reason i'm asking is that I have a couple of filters lying around for my 98. 5 and my 05 will have to be serviced soon. Also, the filters for the 98. 5 are a dollar cheaper per filter :D . Who- ME- cheap, nahh:-laf. Thank you for the responses, Nick.

I believe the newest filters use a Stratopore media. The earlier ones were either a Microglass or standard cellulose media.

I believe the Stratopore filters better than the others.

Isn't that the truth, Ken!! hehe!! :-laf :-laf

I don't know about that, but the fleetguard stratapore is highly recommended for our trucks by others. Its the only filter I'll ever put on mine.

And everyone quotes all the posts above, with quotes nested ten deep, even when it's the post immediately before. :rolleyes:

Of course the guys on TheDieselStop.com say we're mean over here... :-{}

Oh yeah, on topic- I stick with the Stratapore myself. As far as I know that's been in production for years, used them before on my 2000 model.

A while back I did get a wrong filter at the Cummins dealer. His parts list for Dodge was not up to date, so he gave me one for an earlier model, but when I went to install it the threads were too small.
