So my '01 started leaking oil the other day. A fair amount, but not like a hole in the pan type. It was time for a tune up anyhow, so I changed everything. When I pulled the oil filter, it was loose. Other than the obvious, "Scott F-ed up" #@$%!, is there a reason for this? Do I need to check something else?

Well, I think you answered your own question. :-laf

Actually, there really isn't much to it--just make sure the gasket has some oil on it when you put on a new filter, and make sure you tighten it enough so it doesn't loosen up, but loose enough that you can get it off again at oil change time.

You might check that the filter hasn't loosened up after X amount of miles, but that's about all I could suggest.

Two hands, turn as tight as I can from above. Thin film of engine oil on the gasket. Has not failed me yet.

Always removes fairly easily at oil change time using a strap wrench.

Mike. :)

I also use two hands to tighten and then I make a permanent marker dash on side of the filter so I can see at a glance if it has moved.

Thanks guys. I've never had that happen, so I am a bit confused and flustered. I just wanted to make sure I didn't need to change the flibjibbit or the whosit.
Jeep, the marker is a good idea. It think I shall do that also.
