The rubber strap wrenches don't work very well for me. Both my filter strap wrenches use a seat belt like strap which won't stretch as much as a rubber one. Mine allows for a 1/2" drive, I use a large (long) extension with a 10" or longer ratchet. An 18" or longer breaker bar makes it an easy task if you have one. It took a realy long extension to give me enough room for a breaker bar, but a normal ratchet works after you break the first one loose.

Tight oil filter!

Gentleman; the reason that the factory filter is so tight is not from over tightening, but the clear coat that is sprayed on just prior to the engine being finished on the assembly line. the filter base is larger in dia. than the filter and this "catches" the clear coat and it will run down and make the SEAL between the base and filter-just a filler of clear coat that has harden between the two!

After reading many reports on how hard the factory installed filter is to remove, I was dreading doing mine. NOT enough, however, to take it to the dealer. I just got out my trusty steel band filter wrench, a long 3/8" extension, and my long, flex head ratchet. Slid it on from underneath. Worked the strap into just the right spot to get a good crimp and pull on it. Anticipating the worst, I pulled mightily on the ratchet. Loosened right up! Honestly, I don't know if mine just wasn't that tight or if the right tools, etc made the job easy.

I crushed the filter with a strap wrench! Fun :D

The plastic 6 in 1 cap wrench is not working for me, I had to use my stap wrench again for my second oil change. The plastic one broke on me after one use. .

Is there a metal cap wrench that works? Not one of those 6 in 1 deals, I want one of the actual size for the Fleet Guard.

I've already done 4 changes on mine and just use a KD strap wrench. I don't use the fluted fleetguard either. Never had any problems, but the clear coat explanation seems logical. Mine probably didn't have the clear coat run along the oil filter seal.
